Amidst the Derek Jeter Hit Celebration
I know this isn't PC to say, and I know most Sox fans seem to disagree, but I have to say it:
I hate Derek Jeter. I hate his smug face. I hate the way he acts like every called strike against him is a crime against nature. I hate how no one calls him out for having been a twat to A-Rod over an article written in years ago in Esquire. I hate how he's considered a great leader yet he forced the better fielding SS to move to third base because, after all, he's Derek Jeter. I hate him because he's been a thorn in the Sox side. I hate that Sox fans say "you can't hate Derek Jeter." Umm, I can. And do. And yeah, I mean "hate" in the sports sense. I'm using that word for convenience. If I saw him in public, I would not throw chairs at him or piss on his leg. Real hate is reserved for truly hateful people, like killers, etc. One story: About 7 years ago, I had a parking pass for a Sunday game in the lot next to the Old Toilet where the Yankee players park. I was with my then 9-year old son. We got to the game early to watch batting practice and attempt to get balls and autographs from the Sox players. In any event, it became apparent that if we stayed in the lot for a while, we'd see close up a bunch of media types and players, including some of the Sox players. So we stuck around for a while and my son loved it. Eventually, Jeter pulls up in his BMW. We're standing about 50 feet away in our Sox hates and jerseys. He walks up to us (as we're on the way to where he's going) and has the look of someone who is prepared to sign autographs and shake our hands. Without any coaching, my son does exactly what I want him to do: he just stares at Jeter as he walks by with a blank expression on his face. Jeter's look was priceles -- totally confused by the lack of attention. My son got a free pass to junk food for the rest of the day. Great times. |

That's funny. +1 to your boy.
I posted a thread about Jeter the other day on Sox Planet but it's been laying quite dormant with moss growing over it since. Perhaps an archaeologist will stumble upon it in a thousand years and reply to it. Anyway, my intention was to try to give the man some props but this is the best I could do: Even though Nomar's better (pauses for laughter...) Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits all-time by a Yankee last night. Amazing considering the players that have suited up there. What might be even MORE amazing is that no Yankee has ever had their 1st and 3,000th hit in pinstripes. Gehrig likely would have been a slam-dunk to do so if not for, well... But I spent a good portion of Derek Jeter's career thinking he was highly overrated. Perhaps defensively, but I'm rescinding all such previous sentiments. Dude's kinda sorta good. I hate his soul though. From where I sit, that's about as "nice" as I can muster up for Derek Jeter. |

Funny to both Stingley Jr. and OZO Jr. + 1.
Also, I too was amazed and dumbfounded to hear not a single Yankme ever got to 3,000 hits. I'd have guessed quickly off the top of my head at least 4 maybe 5. Weird. |

I fokkin love that they lost the Jeter game 10-4 and then lost today.
Individual records mean squat, especially one like this. 2700 hits. Feh! |

I was out in Minneapolis for a buddy's bachelor party, and I was at a bar the night before waiting for a friend of mine. The MFY's happened to be in town, and lo and behold, Jeter walks into the bar. He sits down next to me, sees me smirking, and says, "Red Sox fan?" I nod, and we chat for a few minutes. When he finds out that I'm there for a bachelor party, he asks if he can give my friend a present.
So he grabs a napkin, and writes, "Congratulations. Don't do it. Derek Jeter." Pretty damn amusing. But yeah, I hate him (again, in the sports sense) for many of the same reasons posted by DS. |
