Chrysler - Fiat merger

This was mentioned by Steve-o in the GM thread but it really didn't get much discussion.

Thinking about this for a minute, you realize that Fiat now has all of the leverage in any merger talks because they know Chrysler has to merge in order to receive $6 billion dollars. Of course, if they are merged, suddenly that $6 billion becomes split between an American company and an Italian company. We've already sent a bunch of bailout money to Europe through AIG. Now we are going to do it through Chrysler? What gives?

Basically, Chrysler isn't viable. Daimler couldn't make a go of it, and finally cut bait. I don't see the point in "bailing them out" any further, as I think we are simply delaying the inevitable.

Maybe a merger with Fiat may save a few jobs, but Chrysler as we knew it, is over.

In all serious, I still want to know: why does Obama want this to happen? What is so awesome about a Chrysler merger with Fiat?

It's estimated that it saves Chrysler $10 billion in research on new engines, etc. because if they merge with Fiat, Fiat will share their technologies with them.

but that doesn't answer the question of why Fiat would be interested in this.

They were already interested in this, and they were already negotiating a merger. The merger wasn't an idea Obama pulled out of his ass.
