tOfficial "Football 101" Thread

Per a great suggestion in the other thread discussing some of the details of the game X/O style, I figured we could use an off-season thread to discuss/ask questions about the X's and O's of the game, and different football-specific (not necessarily Pats-specific) things. There are a lot of people here with some great insight on the game, so let's let 'er rip. Anything you ever wanted to know about the most tremendous game in the world...can go in this thread.

Lets try and stay on-topic, too.

The cool thing about football is that no one knows it all. BB goes to clinics with college coaches, and learn from them. HS coaches to to camps at colleges...and teach the college coaches a thing or two. Collectively, we have a pretty tits group of football peeps here. We can learn a lot.

Is the whole "Cover Two", "Cover Three", "Tampa-2" stuff basically figuring out which quarters of the backfield people have responsibility for?

And what's your view on anal?

Yeah, I love a good ole fashion hi-jack (non-dashoe related) but I think this thread should be hallowed ground so to speak. Let the grown football menz SPEAK!

Is this a good time for suggestions/ideas? I think when the mood strikes it would be sweet to read just any old random post dissecting any one of the thousands of different intricacies to the game.

Maybe this could be a pinned thread too

I'm in the 'think tank'---don't mind me.

I don't really care what the format is. Maybe when I get home I'll just post some random ass stuff, or watch old film to get my mind going. I could see if I have some old situational play sheets to scan. I think I may have them from ND '99 somewhere.

That's what I love about the game. You've got 11 different guys with 11 different skill sets playing 11 different positions, with 11 different responsibilities on each play, and the other 11 guys trying to figure out where those 11 are going, and how to combat them, and then the best-laid plans of mice and men (and coaches) get thrown out the window if one guy slips or fumbles the handoff or screws up the timing and then everyone has to read-and-react to that and adjust... it's like chess on one of those vibrating football-game tables.

Would you consider Wilfork a 0 technique or a 1 technique NT? If he is 1, then does he have 2 gap responsibility?

Yes. Cover 2 means there are two safeties splitting the downfield coverage in half. Cover 3 is split into thirds. Cover 4 = quarters. Cover 1 is man to man, and if there is no man for the FS to cover, he helps the corners out by playing centerfield.

The Tampa 2 differs from the Cover 2 in that the MIKE runs to play centerfield and the two safeties have the outer two thirds. This makes the "big play" less likely by having more players in deep coverage, and also allows the MIKE to shadow a TE releasing on a seam route.

And that all takes place in roughly a minute (pre-snap to completion). Mind-bending.

Yes, but when you say "splitting the downfield coverage in half", you mean the MIDDLE of the "downfield", right? Are the corners in man in a Cover 2? (In other words, "Cover 2" = CBs in man and Ss in zone?)
