OT: A NON-Sex Poll

Ok, so yesterday the wife and I were on a little roadtrip when we started thinking about performers/groups that have survived the test of time, and a song they'd be most recognized for if you surveyed people. For example, the first song that comes to mind when I mention Led Zepplin would more than likely be "Stairway to Heaven", or "Hotel California" for the Eagles. However, there are many that could have several different responses, so I figured I'd post it on a couple of my message boards to see.

For those who are going to answer, reply to this before reading other responses... just list the first song you think of with the artist - think of it like word association. If you can't think of one, just leave it blank.

The Beatles

Pink Floyd

The Rolling Stones

Rush

Styx

KISS

Phil Collins

Madonna (curious how different genrations will answer)

The Beatles
"I Wanna Hold Your Hand" is probably the popular choice for signature song, but I'd go with "A Day in the Life" or "Hey Jude"

Pink Floyd
"Comfortably Numb" - Although I'd go "Us and Them"

The Rolling Stones -
"Start me Up"

Rush
Tough one...I'd go "Spirit of Radio"

Styx
"The Grand Illusion"

KISS
"Rock n Roll All Night"

Phil Collins
"In the air tonight" - but I'd argue over whether Phil has stood the test of time

Madonna (curious how different genrations will answer)
Material Girl - But I HATE her music

One of the reasons I included her is that not only has she been around for quite a while, but she's also "re-invented" herself a couple of times, from the early stuff, to the Virgin/Vogue era, to the current stuff. When we came up with her, my first thought was Vogue, while the wife and my older brother both said Material Girl.

It would be interesting to see a poll on people's opinions of what bands best stand the test of time, but that's a different poll.

The Beatles: This one's the toughest to answer for me because they had phases with different styles, all of which were hugely popular, but all were before my time, so I don't identify with one more than another.

I'll go with REVOLUTION, since it's one of my favorites.

Pink Floyd - DARK SIDE OF THE MOON (whatever the song is on that album that uses that phrase)

The Rolling Stones: Also tough to pick a signature (though it's obviously nothing from the last 25 years). I'll go with SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL, though the one I play the most is probably Emotional Rescue.

Rush: TOM SAWYER

Styx: Was never that into them, but I'll go with BLUE COLLAR MAN, which got tons of airplay in the day.

KISS: My favorite song of theirs is Beth, but have to go with ROCK AND ROLL ALL NITE as the signautre song.

Phil Collins: IN THE AIR TONIGHT, one of the videos I remember most from early MTV.

Madonna: I never would have bought an album of hers, but LIKE A VIRGIN has got to be the signature, plus it made for a great scene in Reservoir Dogs.

In general, I'd agree that Phil doesn't stand the test of time, but that song definitely does.

There was a funny bit in the movie American Psycho where Christian Bale goes through long dissertations on the meaning of the lamest 80's songs before he kills someone. He does a few minutes on Susudio before putting an axe through someone's head.

The Beatles: "She Loves You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", or "Help!". The three big early hits.

Pink Floyd: "Another Brick In The Wall (Pt. 2)" (with "Money" a close second).

The Rolling Stones: probably "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", followed closely by "Jumping Jack Flash", "Mother's Little Helper", and "Start Me Up".

Rush: "Tom Sawyer", easy.

Styx: "Come Sail Away" (unfortunately), easy.

KISS: another easy one. Although they had a lot of hits, hands-down it's "Detroit Rock City".

Phil Collins: "In The Air Tonight".

Madonna (curious how different genrations will answer): probably "Like A Virgin".
