Bret Bielema has a role on Patriotsí staff

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...atriots-staff/

Bret Bielema was fired as the head coach at Arkansas in November and hasnít officially taken a job anywhere since then, but unofficially heís been working with the Patriots, and it appears he is heading toward a permanent role on the staff.

Bielema was working with the Patriots in the run-up to the NFL draft, and Field Yates of ESPN reports that Bielema has continued to work with the team and will be involved in coaching this weekendís rookie minicamp.

The often-secretive Patriots have not announced anything about Bielema joining the coaching staff, so itís unclear what role he is filling.

Bielema was head coach at Arkansas for five years and at Wisconsin for seven years. Prior to that he was defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, co-defensive coordinator at Kansas State and linebackers coach at Iowa. He is likely to have some role on the defensive side of the ball, where the Patriots have not announced a replacement for the departed defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Brian Flores is expected to call the defensive plays for the Patriots.

He's been around a while and has been mentioned quite a bit for his role in helping with the draft this year. His defensive background in college will help him but he has a long way to go to learn the nuances of BB's bend-but-don't-break philosophy of D. Maybe he'll bring some ideas of his own that will actually make stops on 3rd down.

All high profile Patriot type factories on his resume. Iím sure Bill loves his body of work.

Itís just their way. From outside the org youíre gradually immersed.

Unless youíre the hot positional coaching prospect from the N. Dakota School of Mines.

And I have a long way to go to learn to tolerate BB's BBDB.

Fact is, Brady has been allowing him to get away with this concept for the last 17 years.

He asks his players to keep the play in front of them no matter what and they spend the whole game playing off and going backwards and then at the end he goes for a kill shot.

He tries to bore the other team to death until they just figure they can make a first down anytime they want and then he crosses them up. It's fiendishly stupid, imo.

I wish he would unleash the hounds once in a while.

Here! Here!

At least have an aggressive attack package, even if less frequent than Hale-Bopp.

I don't think you could get Bill to speak honestly about this subject, but as a fan I want to see emotion from the players while Bill seems to want the opposite.

Sure, there is only so far emotion can take you during a football season, but the problem seems to be when your game plan is flat as a pancake it's tough to suddenly decide to throw some exploding parakeets in there and expect people to respond after getting their asses kicked for 55 minutes.

I really feel like some of our bigger losses over the last few years came when we were unable to match an opponents surge of emotion and adrenaline. I'm talking about post-season losses and certainly Philly played a more attacking, aggressive style on both sides of the ball and they were feeling it.

I'd like to see the genius tweak the defensive formula a little bit to let the boys be boys more frequently.

I suspect BB will want to get him away from that kind of thinking, before signing him up.

I wonder if other teams that have had success vs BB already kind of know this?

It would make for interesting discussion...

What coaches have winning records against BB? Must be a short list.

Mostly superbowl or playoff victories...but, yes. Agreed.
