Brain-picking

Back in the summer of 1960, June 21, to be exact, the brand new Patriots held a tryout in Newton. For a piece I'm writing, I'd like to hear from anyone who was there.

Welcome to the Planet.

I am too young, but you may get lucky finding someone here, though I can't imagine there were all that many to begin with.

Good luck with your search for participants in 1960!

I came across one guy but he was difficult to get together with. Strange thing, in my talks with the people at Patriots' Place who are in charge of the museum and the archives, I was told that very few records were kept that first year and, basically, none from the tryouts they held. Mike Holovak, who I had a connection with way back then is, of course, long gone.

UNDERTAKER #59 -- Believe it or not, there were hundreds. Park League players; ex-college players; semi-pros; mailmen; teachers; and guys who looked like they never handled a football in their lives. If the name Dick D'Alesandro means anything to anyone out there, let me know.

I was eight. My sole memory of the Patriots that year was seeing my brother who was 13 watching them on TV and him telling me that Boston had a new football team that he heard was supposed to be pretty good. Our interest in football completely diverged after that - he never became a fan but I did - it's hard for me to remember exactly which year I started following them. It was definitely after they got trounced by the Chargers in the AFL championship game, which to me was something that I read about after I started paying attention to them.

That sounds about right. I'd been back from WWII for a while at that point. Wise-ass coffee-guy, huh?

I had just turned thirteen when Dad and I went to the Bills game on 9/23/60 at BU.

That was my first contact.

I knew they were holding open tryouts, but I have no knowlege and certainly didn't get there. Sorry I can't help.
