That is a diagram of a Wing-T Waggle Pass which is a play-action pass off of Buck Sweep/Trap action. Most teams consider a waggle to be a pass in which the QB rolls out away from the fake run action.

This is a mis-direction series in which the FB may get the ball on a trap, the Half-back on a sweep or the QB may take it to the edge to either run or pass. The guards pull to block for the QB. What happens after that depends on defensive alignment and reaction.
And as far as the routes being run, I see a Post, a slant-post (?) and a Go/9/Fly/Jet/whatever.

I'm not sure what you'd call the route that the RB is running, and obviously the other RB is blocking.

Classic Cover Two, I think:

That it is. The two deep Safeties each have a half zone deep and the CBs have the flats.

That one does look wonky. I looked up "NFL route diagram" in google image search and that came up. I've never seen a play like that in the NFL before.

I'm not sure what you'd call the route that the RB is running, and obviously the other RB is blocking.
The half-back who fakes the sweep blocks the back-side DE.

The FB's route is drawn wrong. The FB would fake his trap and release to the front side flat just outside the front side tackles' down block and level off at five yards. The diagram has him releasing on the wrong side of the formation. The Back-side TE and Wing (listed as a TE in the diagram) would run either a post or roll across the formation at about eight yards deep. The coverage would determine who rolls and who posts.

The WR runs a go route. This is a weak-side waggle. The Corner back, OLBs and Safety's reactions to the Trap & Sweep dictate when to call this play.

This is a weak-side waggle.
Weak side waggle = the QB is running away from the initial motion of the play towards the 'light' side of the formation (in this case the side without two TEs lined up there). Close?

Looks like another play-action bootleg, but is this one a Waggle (why or why not)?

This play doesn't look like it would have any chance at success as currently diagramed.

lol, maybe it's an armchair Madden kid that designed it. I dunno, another result of my NFL Route Diagram search.

Results? Unconvincing!

Weak and strong are defined differently by the secondary and the front. In this case the weak-side is to the offenses right for both. There is one receiver to the right and two to the left in position to release on the snap and the TE on the LOS is also aligned to the left so the Front also regards the offenses' right as the weak-side.

If the QB stays in the pocket it is workable depending on how deep number 2's whip route is. I don't know of any QB that wants to attack the LOS on that pass unless the FB were looking to block.

I have learned to read safeties. So far that's how I decide where to throw regardless of the blitz, etc.

Of course I play on the second easiest mode, so I'm sure that if I turned the difficulty up I'd get into trouble and throw mad INTs.

What is a MOF?

Does that have to do with the Mike LB? (as if I know what that means exactly anyway)
First I would officially like to give a standing
to you bf80 for starting this thread, and to all those that participated!!!!! THIS is why I first joined the mb's in the first place.

To answer your question, Mike means middle linebacker in a 4/3 D. Sam means strong side linebacker and Will means weak side linebacker. Strong side means the TE side of the offensive formation. In a 3/4 the inside linebackers have several terms applied. One common one is Mike and Mo! (where's my pic of Light's shocked face?)

And although the Pats use many different D looks in coverage, it is quite common, especially this season and last, to see them in a "cover 3 shell" before snap. The diagram has already been given so I wont give it again. But just because they show cover 3, it doesn't mean they dont shift from it from time to time. This is where I've seen Hobbs "getting torched" this season. And Pees was right. It was mostly a function of the defense called.

Another question - In some of these diagrams the LBs are listed as "W M S" and I assume that means Will Mike Sam.. but why are the LBs called that and what do each of those things mean? If you don't mind..

To both Dave and AWTE and all the others that have contributed to the educational use of this thread: Thank you! ! ! ! !
