Gosh. Your comment about "Mike" was another lightbulb moment. The bit about blitz pickups is something I'll read again tomorrow morning with a pen and paper in hand (it's 2am here). I kind of get it but need to write out diagrams to help me, I think.

I always wondered about blitz pickups as the Pats seem to be a damn good job of capturing most blitzers. Again, it's very impressive stuff, AWTE.

I've always been fascinated by offensive line play; at High School, (in the mid 80s), I was the centre during break times, on most plays (mainly due to a lack of athleticism, with the necessary bit of weight and chip on shoulder!). It was good fun, even if I wasn't any good, although like all linemen, I learned the art of holding. Tip to refs: throw a flag every play. Someone is holding! >)

I used to buy a magazine which detailed plays such as the Skins' counter gap- the one they used ad infinitum against Denver in the Superbowl- I'm crap with SB numbers, but it was the one where Timmy Smith ran for a million yards. I remember watching the highlights of that SB and the commentator at one point said, "guess the play they just ran" as Smith went through yet another hole.

I think the Skins only had about three true running plays in their play book back then and they all resembled each other. I actually have the rules for the Skins old Counter Trey stashed away somewhere.

I wish they would sell entire seasons worth of games in their entirety. I would buy a mid-eighties Skins' season and a couple of late eighties Giants' seasons and not be seen for about a week.

I'm watching the Path to Perfection program on NFL Network and Jaworski just pointed out to Steve Sabol that Brady is the most blitzed QB by a wide margin...with a passer rating of 115 vs. the blitz.

Here you go...proof!

But others have tried to blitz him, too, and the results haven't been much prettier. In 2007, Brady was the NFL's most blitzed quarterback. He faced the heat on 219 of his 578 attempts, or 37 percent of the time. (By comparison, Jaguars quarterback David Garrard was blitzed on just 94 of his 325 attempts, or 28 percent.) Brady's quarterback rating in the face of the blitz: 118.7 with 17 touchdown passes, and just two interceptions -- by far, the best in the league.

But of all those blitzes, how many were able to actually get some pressure on him? If you blitz, but you can't get to the QB, all you're doing is leaving your secondary exposed.

Agreed. So I'd have to assume a few things:

1) NE is excellent at overall 'blitz pickup' from WR reads to the extra blocker picking up the extra rusher to Brady reading the defense and having an idea of where he wants to go with the ball before it's snapped.

2) Teams that are blitzing NE are shooting themselves in the foot and playing right into NE's hands.

3) The best way to get pressure on Brady is good coverage in the secondary and a solid 4-man pass rush.

DEALING WITH BLITZING DEFENSES

This is a long post but I hope it's given some insight into how teams read and deal with the blitz. If there are any questions, feel free, if I don't know the answer, I'll try to find out.
If there was a HOF for posts, this would be a first round inductee!

This was an absolutely AWESOME job! I have reread it twice and still can't grasp it all at one time.

Thanks for that AWTE.

Thanks Baron. The Jags game is a great illustration of the uncovered principle in action both in the pass and run game. The Jags played most of the game with two Safeties and covered down so you get a great look at how the numbers work out in the box. The Pats also dialed up a few blitzes late without any Deep Safeties giving us a look at that situation. If you get a chance, skim through the breakdown thread where we talked about a lot of that stuff while re-watching the game. Seeing it will clarify things and help you see things things live if your looking for it.

This is coming from Madden 08 so forgive me if I donít explain it perfectly. What is the D doing (or most likely doing) when the two Safeties creep up and the linebackers align out to cover the WRs?

Also, to help my Madden game Ė whatís a good play to counter this on Offense?
