No, you're correct. A lot of folks were upset and saw him as a valuable guy and, I should have mentioned, he was a solid GM when it came to cap management and so forth.

I was probably in a minority in thinking he was a fraud and most of that was due to a series of really shitty drafts. I don't speak for Patriot Nation.

GMs are not the only people responsible, you've got all kinds of scouts and Belichick also involved, so I shouldn't have blamed just Pioli.

But I chose to blame him and I stand by that despite getting Mayo and Slater in his last year here which was '08. Overrated as a GM.

It's that simple. The GM allocates monentary resources, salary cap and all that and has final say in who comes and goes and how they get paid, which is quite different than his current situation. I can recall reading an unnamed source saying that some folks in our War Room were definitely not happy with some of Bill's seemingly odd decisions in past drafts and it occurred to me that Caserio may have been the guy they were referring to. That is pure speculation on my part, but it is possible that, say, he wasn't thrilled over the Jordan Richards pick. For instance.

GM is also considered a more prestigious position.

Like it or not, titles mean something to a lot of people in the NFL and let's hope that Caserio really doesn't care and is quite content with letting Bill make all the final decisions.

If not, then we may have a problem.

I fail to see why people don't think this could happen just because he's been here quite a while. He's the best GM candidate in football. Maybe he wants that and is ready for a change. That happens to folks.
It could most definitely happen...

Something happens to Watson, a scrambling QB, and JJ plays his typical 5 games and a 1st rounder penalty could theoretically be a top 5 pick.

Franchise QB via Houston?

Me likely!

Watson isn't that good in my opinion...he is very...eh. He is made of glass.

BOB isn't the best coach...but, he could keep sneaking into the playoffs. I doubt that he will ever win a super bowl. He is smart enough to get hired by BB...but, BOB is very stubborn and assholish.

But as far as tampering goes...will actually help the Pats? I have my doubts.

Evidence of potential tampering comes from photos, videos, other proof of interactions between Texans exec @JackEasterby and Caserio at last Thursday's Patriots ring ceremony, which happened the night before the Houston G.M. job became vacant.

Interesting that Easterby, the former Pats' character guy, is now the Texans' contact guy for getting Caserio to break his contract with the Pats to join the Texans. As of now, the situation seems to me that a discussion took place and Caserio expressed more than a little interest. The next day, Gaine was fired and within hours the Texans' petitioned for permission to talk to Caserio. Tampering? Yeah, clearly...what amounts to an inside job by a recent employee. Caserio is ready to take the Texans' GM job? Yeah, it sure seems that way. Terms and pay were discussed? For sure - either that or the Texans are ready to back the Brinks money truck up to Caserio's house and Caserio knows it. Was that their first contact with Caserio? lol, No!

By filing tampering charges the Pats have bought time by skirting the permission issue...for now. This should give RKK et al time to find out what it would take for Caserio to stay & to negotiate w/ Caserio. Caserio probably approached Kraft/BB before any of this became public. Negotiations between Kraft and Caserio have already begun more than likely and the Pats already know how the story ends. With the tampering charge, BB has leveraged negotiations for compensation if Caserio does leave. The Pats are playing hardball against former employees and I don't blame them. Caserio is too important and too good at his player personnel job to let him go without a fight. If BB already knows Caserio wants to leave, BB is thinking 'FU' & 'don't let door hit you in the ass...' and, btw, I'm getting some of your picks.

How I think it ends.
Caserio walks (bridges have been burned) and the Pats get a minimum of a 1st round pick. In addition, the Texans pay a $3-4M fine and get a slap on the wrist.

I'd feel differently if Caserio had made a statement before the tampering charges were filed to put all this to rest. He didn't.

edit: I'm hearing the Texans also want Pats Director of College Scouting, Monte Ossenfort, to leave along with Caserio. FU, Texans!

In only a few short months Easterby has gained plenty of juice with the Texans.

Who takes over if Caserio leaves? --> Director of College Scouting, Monti Ossenfort. He's been with the Pats for 16 years.

Plus, he's climbed the ladder, going from working as an intern with both the Vikings and Texans (where he also spent two years as a pro and college scouting assistant) to the top of the college scouting department. In 2003, he worked the team as a personnel assistant in 2003, but eventually became an area and national scout in New England a few years later, and the director of college scouting in 2014 when he took over for Jon Robinson. BB has frequently talked up Ossenfort and the work of the scouting department. This past April, he BB said “Monti and his staff, who have been working on the draft since the day after the 2018 draft – well, actually before that – but let’s call it the day after the 2018 draft,” Belichick said. “(They) compiled an enormous amount of information both from a football standpoint, character, medical and so forth on several thousand players, which gets whittled down to let’s call it 100 or so in the final analysis.
“It’s a very lengthy and tedious one that Monti and his staff have, I think, done a great job on,” he added. “Those guys certainly deserve a lot of the credit for the success that we’ve had, the players that we’ve been able to acquire and the enormous amount of work that they’ve produced, really, on a daily basis, but it adds up over weeks, months and years at a time.”

Will Patriots and Texans strike a deal on compensation?

Quote:
Posted by Mike Florio on June 13, 2019, 6:21 AM EDT

The Patriots could, in theory, push their tampering case against the Texans with a level of zeal aimed at blowing up Houston’s pursuit of Nick Caserio, forcing the Texans to look elsewhere for Brian Gaine’s replacement. The Patriots could instead use the league’s procedures to force the Texans to pay a stiff penalty for violating the tampering rules, if that can be proven.

Or the Patriots and Texans could simply strike a deal.

One source with knowledge of the dynamics and personalities involved in this fight believes that, ultimately, a deal will be struck for compensation, with the Texans giving the Patriots a draft pick or two or something else and with Caserio becoming the new G.M. of the Texans. The reason is simple: If Caserio wants to go and is force to stay, things could get awkward for the Patriots.

And if Caserio wants to go, it means that his relationship with coach Bill Belichick essentially has been broken, and that Caserio prefers not to try to fix it. If, in the end, the G.M. job is closer to G.M. Light than true G.M. status, he’s really not leaving for something more but instead for something else. And that something else will be a football operation that has a long way to go to be as successful as the Patriots have been.

Whether a deal is struck quickly will hinge on whether the Texans are willing to give the Patriots whatever they’re willing to take for Caserio. It may take some time, allowing the tampering case to play out a bit, with New England putting a few of its card on the table. But it shouldn’t take much time, because the Texans need to hire a G.M. sooner than later.

Play hard ball Bill!

Minimum 1st.

1st and 3rd could be had. He’s been that good.

And before the deal is struck for Caserio get Monti signed as GM.
