What would you bring?

Seeing the fires that are taking everything away from people with them losing all they own I thought of what it might feel like to lose everything. I can empathize but I doubt I would come close to imaging what it would feel like.

If you were told you were about to lose everything you own and you were given a chance to save five inanimate objects from your home in ten minutes what would the items be?

Interesting question:

1. My mom (although she is slightly animated)
2. File cabinet with vital papers and policies.
3. Laptop #1
4. Laptop #2
5. Wedding Album (pictures from 1982 cannot be replaced)

obviously I would be too busy getting kids and pooch but I would grab:
1. Phone
2. computer back-up drive
3. change of clothes for the three of us
4. wallet
5. keys to vehicle

back up drive has copies of pictures from last 20 years, phone so I can let people know we are OK, clothes in case we are wet or not properly dressed for elements, wallet and keys are self explanatory.

really once kids and I are out, everything else is replaceable including my Mom's cast iron pan she used to police 4 boys

3. Filing cabinets & keys (all of my important personal/business stuff)
4. Keys to car (gets me around and doubles as phone)
5. Stereo equipment (several irreplaceable items)

Since we're talking inanimate I will assume my family and pets are already safe and I;m not counting the stuff I aways keep on me like cell phone, wallet, keys.

1. Ashes
2. Family pictures
3. Laptop - Vital records and pictures
4. Backup drive - vital records and pictures
5. Wife's Jewelry box - a lot of it is heirloom stuff

Everything else is replaceable

#1 is kind of odd. There will be plenty of ashes there afterward.

My best friend actually did lose everything in the Oakland fire about 20 years ago. Entire house and contents burned to the ground. And, sadly, her cats had run away in fear and also died. She and partner barely had time to jump in the car and flee so she was literally left with only her car and the clothes they escaped in. Amazingly, she was pretty stoic about the whole thing, even though she had lost an entire lifetime's worth of "stuff." She grieved for her cats the worst, not her belongings.

I keep a bugout box, one of those Tupperware storage bins with critical stuff in it. It's a lot more than 5 things, but I'll add / augment some stuff.
off the top of my head:

Cash
USB drive with important pics and docs, hell with the laptop.
solar radio / phone charger
Firearm and ammo
A few days of meds
first aid kit
Water
freeze dried trail meals
Lighter
set of keys for my summer camp ( backup housing)
pet stuff, food etc.

I keep important keepsakes, jewelry, insurance policies, birth certificates, heirlooms in a safe deposit box.

That's actually pretty smart. This kind of kit often gets laughed at because of the "prepper" association, but what your really prepping for is the need to evacuate in a hurry, not the zombie apocalypse.

Don't forget to rotate the meds.

Here in NE we arenít as likely to deal with earthquakes, fires and the like so a lot of people donít think of it. But itís not hard or expensive to prepare, and I once had to evacuate for a hurricane with almost nothing so it made me think. Fortunately I had no losses and returned home but it sucked having my wallet and keys and car and nothing else for a day.

Weíre due for a huge MFer hurricane here and Iím mindful of that.

Living in CA, we do have a small stash of emergency supplies in the basement. Essentials only: cash (in a giant bank-style safe), gallons of water, canned/dried food, matches & candles, flashlight, Swiss army knife, battery radio, toilet paper and CAT FOOD. We just had a small shaker the other day and it reminded me that disaster really could strike at any second.

As to meds, I'll just have to die of heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol. Hopefully help would arrive before that happened. lol

If we are just talking the house is going to burn down the list would be one thing. If it was the zombie apocalypse it would be another.

I'll go with the burning down.

a handgun
money
vehicle
my desktop computer
my cell phone

assuming i have my every day things already on me (wallet car keys)- nothing. i would use the 10 min to get me and mine that much closer to safety. things are not something i prize in any way shape or form.
