Another first-round pick who underperformed in Cleveland but is basically an athletic freak. Let's see what Bill can do with him.

Meet the new Branch. Same as the old Branch.

Seriously, he's not as good as Branch when Alan felt like playing, which was about once a month, but he's probably a more consistent player. That was Alan. Frustrating as hell, but he'd have those games where he was a force inside and about as good as any big man in the NFL.

Hopefully, Shelton wants to make something out of this opportunity.

Mayock loved him coming out even if he took a few plays off every game.

NFL Media's Mike Mayock was already touting Shelton as a possible top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and it doesn't appear his opinion has changed after getting an up-close look at the defensive tackle over the past few days.
"When you put the tape on, you can't help but think of Haloti Ngata," Mayock said. "For a guy that's 343 pounds, his strength is outstanding. He's got a little hump move like Reggie White and Howie Long had, too. He has way more lateral quickness than people think he has and he played the majority of snaps at the University of Washington. Most big guys can't do that. He's had a special week."
The Ngata comparisons aren't new for Shelton, who has drawn rave reviews for his strength and ability to clog running lanes in college. However, his ability to stay on the field instead of going to the sideline to rest when facing an up-tempo offense could separate Shelton from other nose tackles.
Such stamina is one reason why Mayock believes Patriots star Vince Wilfork is perhaps an even more apt NFL comparison for Shelton.
"If you have a top-10 pick, the thing you have to ask yourself is will he consistently have an ability, when you go to sub-packages, to push the pocket," Mayock said. "I think he does. I would put him in the category with a Vince Wilfork."

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...-vince-wilfork

DS should be a happy guy today.

With Shelton's trade, the Browns have purged all seven of their first-round draft picks from 2012-15.

edit: And all 10 1st round picks from 2009-2015. Damn

I'm told the Pats offered a 3rd rnd pick to the Seahawks for Bennett but the deal had already been struck.

Trade compensation update: Browns get a mid-round 2019 pick from Patriots, and Patriots get DT Danny Shelton and a 2018 draft pick from Browns, per source.

Not a bad deal at all. Shelton is still on his rookie deal with an option year to boot plus the Pats pick up a 5th round pick this year for a 3rd rnd pick in 2019.

Danny Shelton (6-2, 335) has played under three different defensive coordinators in 3 years -- Jim O'Neil (3-4 scheme), Ray Horton (3-4), Gregg Williams (4-3). Big, strong presence at nose. Projects as better scheme fit in Patriots' multiple D.

That and the sad sack Browns may have had something to do with Shelton not living up to his potential.

Here's hoping.

BB in 2016 on Shelton

Compared to out own picks you can basically call that a 4th and a 2nd round pick :-)

Not sure I follow you.
The 3rd round pick we give up next year is like a 4th round pick this year.
We're getting back a 5th this year plus we get the player.

Shelton took plays off, but who wouldn't if you play on a 1- 31 team over last 2 years. Hoping the new scenery lights a fire under his potential. Lots of upside for Pats.

I'll say this about the guy. He is an enthusiastic, vocal player who has very powerful hands. He can really club guys around.

However, his body is a mess. He's listed in the 340s only because nobody ever lists a guy at 365. Maybe he'll work out a bit and try to shed some of that bad weight. Wilfork did it, but he was the exception to the rule. And it might have cost him a season or two.

If Shelton could lose 25 pounds he'd be pretty quick afoot. I saw him at the Combine and he looked almost slender. Relatively. He carries his flab fairly well.

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but there is a reason why John Dorsey dumped him. He's not a three down player anyways, and we don't need him to be -- but I have my doubts that he can even pass the conditioning run.

BTW, he has a nickname of "Feast Mode".

We got a legit fattie!!!!

And another pick!

Gave up our 3rd next year, but get a likely 3rd comp anyways.

And with Shelton on his rookie deal we’ll get a pick there if he doesn’t re-up.

Pure larceny.

This guy takes 25lb turds.

Vince was NEVER svelt. That number they perennially listed was from the Combine. He was closer to 4 bills than that number.

This is an incredible signing.

10 against the run last year for a sucktastic team. Think what he’ll do for Bill.

Shelton should perform much better in the Pats 3-4 as pure nose tackle.
