I don't understand why you seem to think the players should have intuitively known what they were doing to their bodies when it was widely assumed by the public and football community in general that the injuries they sustained to their brains were strictly acute, and the only people with info stating otherwise made every attempt to hide it.
Not necessarily knowing the intricate specifics, but, I used to work in the oil patch (various jobs in the trade). Most everyone going into it is generally aware that it's one of the most dangerous jobs ever. I guess that's what I'm saying.

There is a much higher chance that you can get injured bad...and possibly die on the job with all of the known hazards.
