I remember reading somewhere - but don't quote me on this - that this rule goes back something like 70 years.

I don't think anyone anywhere even remotely considered that this rule would be so insanely scrutinized to the absolute letter the way it has, but they were underestimating the amount of hatred and jealousy so many across the NFL have for Belichick, Brady and the Patriots. The league probably figured no team would be butthole enough to actually file a complaint over something so small, so stupid, and something so many teams are already circumventing.

I worked in HR and learned early on to document everything or it basically didn't happen. So how can they say with 100% certainty (Brunell's tears notwithstanding) the balls were out of tolerance when they don't keep a record of the pressures as measured? To me, that makes the case closed.

"Air Pressure

FIFA laws state the air pressure in a regulation ball must be between 8.5 psi and 15.6 psi. Before every game, referees check the ball to make sure it is suitable for play."

They could simplify that quite easily:

"The ball must have some air in it. Before every game the referees will check the ball to make sure it floats."

actually I think the game would be really interesting if the "ball" could be anything the offensive team wants to throw and catch. literally anything. a dead cat for all I care.

I'm not saying the "ball" would have to be an animal, and don't think we would see teams throwing hamsters, but what object would they throw if they could throw anything? a nurfball with fins?

Technically, the ball was once an animal.

Not sure why PETA hasn't been all over this.
