Bernie: Hoisted by his own Petard

https://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...=.cf37e1c3bf61

I. Pushing national minimum wage at 15 dollars
2. Encourages his employees to unionize.

3. Union: Hey Bernie, you know... How come we ain't getting $15?

No big deal, but it does make me chuckle.

\Cheers

It gets better.

Bernie agreed to pay them $15/hr, but then cut their hours.

Quote:
Amid a pay war within his own 2020 presidential campaign, Bernie Sanders will limit the amount of time his organizers can work to guarantee that no one is making less than $15 per hour — a wage the senator has demanded should be the federal minimum.
But the real kicker in this little link, is the headline provided by Newsweek.

Quote:
BERNIE SANDERS CAMPAIGN RESPONDS TO $15 MINIMUM WAGE CONTROVERSY WITH BETTER HOURS FOR STAFF

Yes sirree that's some fine non biased news reporting right there, you betcha.

This seems like as good a thread to post this as any.

It seems Kamala Harris has an issue with gender pay equality in both her Senate office and her campaign.

From here

Quote:
In her Senate office's most recent six-month disclosure, covering the period from April 1, 2018, through Sept. 31, 2018, the median male salary disbursement was $34,999 and the median female salary disbursement was $32,999, leaving women with just 94 cents of every dollar paid to men.

The gender pay gap for the previous six-month period, during which the median male salary was $27,167 and the median female salary was $25,749.97, was a nearly identical 6 percent.

The pay gap was even greater during the first full month of Harris's presidential campaign in February—the median female salary disbursement for the month, $5,763.97, was about 87 percent of the median male salary disbursement, $6,632.23, a further analysis of her campaign filing found.

The Harris campaign came closer to gender pay equality in March, when the median female disbursement was about 95 percent of the median male disbursement.
Funny how everyone can agree there are only two genders when it comes to this topic.

Oh and before anyone starts to argue that these pay discrepancies may have something to do with just what job any individual does, that's not how the so called "gender pay gap" issue is framed by those on the left.

Take this Vox article for example.

Quote:
As Harris’s plan is structured, companies with 100 or more employees would be required to disclose pay data to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in order to demonstrate that they’ve closed the gender pay gap between men and women who perform comparable roles. Companies that aren’t able to show they’ve achieved this would be penalized a percentage of their profits.

Her plan aims to fix a pervasive problem: Right now, women are still paid 80 cents on the dollar for what men make, on average, and it’s even worse among women of color. Latina women make 53 cents on the dollar, Native American women make 58 cents, and black women make 61 cents, according to a release from Harris. Those gaps have major implications for women’s economic success and their long-term earning potential.
Note how the first part mentions "comparable roles" while the pay discrepancy cited is "on average".

I won't even get into the subject of roles vs performance. I don't think anyone, except maybe Bernie and AOC, would suggest that 100% of men should all be paid the same amount for "comparable roles", they would readily accept that higher performers should receive higher compensation.

Reasonable people can disagree as to how one measures that, but I doubt anyone who believes in capitalism questions that principle. But I digress.

So just how does data on a difference in "average" payment demonstrate a difference in "comparable roles"?

Are we to think that there is 0% deviation between the two sexes (there's that damn two sexes thing again!) job selection?

That is, regardless of the occupation, there is a perfect 50-50 split as to the workforce?

Of course not, that's absurd.

It doesn't happen due to discrimination, it happens due to individual choice.

Yes, there are individuals of each sex who are interested in doing any and all jobs. However, there is a statistical distribution amongst the population where a greater number of men are interested in job A and a greater number of women are interested in job B.
