This is coming from Madden 08 so forgive me if I don’t explain it perfectly. What is the D doing (or most likely doing) when the two Safeties creep up and the linebackers align out to cover the WRs?

Also, to help my Madden game – what’s a good play to counter this on Offense?
What defense are they running? Base 4-3? Nickel, dime? LBs align out to cover the WRs, what does that mean? Are they playing a short zone? Are they out on the line across from the WRs (unlikely?) I'd have to see. Can you draw out what you're asking, then I can answer.

EDIT: One thing that they could do in a situation like you described is mask a blitz and stunt down low. The safeties can be creeping in to throw off the read, and the backers moving out to sell the blitz. Then a corner can come straight off the edge while the backer picks up the short zone and the safety falls back and gives deep help in cover 2 while the middle backer keeps his responsibilities. The other side can be a decoy for the Will to get a better angle off the edge and come around the end. The corner can jam the receiver or play man or short zone depending on the Mike responsibilities and the safety can fall back for cover 2 or help on a different call.

This would be out of base.

Thank you for the response.

It's more like the LBs (or additional DBs) align out to cover the WRs. I normally see this defense when I'm in a SingleBack/4WR or Shotgun/4WR set.

Any thoughts on the Giants defense? What is their normal coverage? I'd be interested if anyone can point out something about their defense to watch for during the game...

Is there a decent website out there that has a lot of diagrams and breakdowns of different offensive and defensive formations and plays?

Are you talking about man coverage?

There are many different types of man coverage.

Cover 0 is full man. If you see no deep Safeties (PRE & POST SNAP) the CBs are in man.

Cover 1=One Free Safety in the MOF. CBs can be tight or loose. CBs in man usually take an inside to head up alignment and watch the receiver not the QB. Cover 1 w/loose CBs looks like Cocer 3 pre-snap. CBs may only be about 5 yards off the ball and head up though. Cover 3 CBs align about 7 off the ball in mast cases and are a yard outside split wide #1 receivers (1x7 alignment). Sometimes the Cbs will be aligned deeper in the CB if vunerable deep.

Cover 2=Two Free Safeties. With in this there can be full man under or just man up by the CBs or just man up by the LBs/$ defenders or just an individual defender man up on an indivudual receiver (ex $ on the Slot Receiver).

Cover 3 and 4 can also feature full or partial man under.

See what the Safeties are doing first, check the alignment of the CBs looking at their leverage and eyes. Check what the Safeties tell you against what the Cbs are telling you. If they are in a man alignment pre-snap tight to the LOS an jamming you have press man unless they bail late. Cover 2 Corners also align tight to the LOS and jam the receiver but from an outside alignment. They want to funnel the receiver to the inside and will let him go to defend the flat if it is threatened. With practice, you will be able to tell the difference between press man and a zone Cover 2 CB's alignment and technique.

Loose man defenders will often close on their assigned receivers post snap rather than drop to a zone. The difference is hard to pick up on TV tapes but if you look for it you'll see some examples and get used to seeing it. It's easier to see it when a Safety or LB does it to a TE but watch for it on the edge and you'll get familiar w/it.

I posted a guide to recognizing coverages earlier in this thread. Take a look at it. It's not cvomprehensive but gives an idea of what you need to look at to really ID the coverage, which isn't easy. Many times, the true extent of the coverage only gives itslef away when you get a look at it against different pass patterens.

There's no easy way to know though without understanding how the coverages work and how the alignments act as tip offs. If you really want to recognize different coverages with regularity you'll have to study up on them. Read through the threads devoted to those topics and look at film looking for tip offs until you start recognizing things. You'll never get them all right because of the inherent limitations available to us at home but you'll get pretty good at it if you want to.
