The Patriot O Line

They were the real MVPs yesterday imho. They were superb and Scar should take a well-deserved slap on the back for that units play yesterday.

I'm sure Hawk73 will give his thoughts on their play and I'll be interested to read it. Trent Brown has been excellent and at his best in run blocking. They actually bullied a top calibre, tough as teak Charger front 7 yesterday. Add Gronk into the mix and this line will surely be the difference in the Pats winning another SB or not. Because once Tom has protection and run lanes are open, the offense looks unbeatable.

Shaq Mason being healthy has been crucial as well and when he went off yesterday briefly, the Chargers got some pressure on.

Well done again Scar.

I thought it was one of their best games so far and Gronk was a real road-grader yesterday. He probably had one his BEST games all season and it wasn't because of his catches (although the one he did catch, he made 2 defenders miss - classic Gronk-style).

Kudos to Scar and that whole OL + Gronk/Allen group.

Yeah, I think Gronk was a real hero yesterday. I'm certain Patriots fans will remember this for a long time.

The Burkhead TD in particular. I could watch that all off season.

Standout DEs blown 5yds back off the ball.

In retrospect, we should have all known that there is a good reason why every team but the Chargers use regular linebackers on D (and I know they didn't have a lot of choice due to injuries) and that we'd use physicality to break down LA's smaller lineup. Having said that, they didn't have a plan B or didn't want to go away from what got them to the Divisional round. And they got smoked.

The nagging question in my mind is why Baltimore didn't use their power run game inside and that is, apparently, because Jon Harbaugh isn't smart enough to see that they were way too dependent on Lamar Jackson's ability to get yards in space. They made it easy for LA.

As always the Pats are the most flexible team in the league and can play seemingly any style they need to depending on matchups and other teams stick with their strengths and can't adapt on the fly to the extent we can and do.

I was there so still need to watch the game, but it was clear from the stands that we got a great game from the entire OL. You see Ingram and Bosa making a dozen plays each against the Ravens and each made only a couple versus us, so I'm sure the game plan was designed to take them out of the game as much as possible as was taking the ball after winning the toss to get on top early and prevent that pass rush from taking over.

Great game plan, great execution. One presnap penalty from what I recall, none on the OL, but a much cleaner game than we've seen over the 2nd half of the season.

Best game of the year against a good opponent, but we'll need to be even better next week. God, we looked sharp.

The problem is, when the chargers used 7 db's they played zone and they picked that apart. Ravens cannot do that. So they keyed on the ravens run, and dared them to pass, for whatever reason they tried the same thing vs the pats. Early on the chargers did stop the run on the first few attempts, but then the pats would just go to the short pass, and then back to the run. Chargers were on their heels.

On another subject but showing how the pats gameplan really worked. Bosa told of an exchange with Brady during the game.

“He did a really good job getting rid of the ball,” Bosa admitted. “I mean, every single time I won — which, I won a few pass rushes here and there — the ball was gone. We made a joke, we were talking to each other and he just patted me on the back and I said, ‘Stop getting rid of the ball so fast!’ He said, ‘Stop getting to me so fast and I won’t have to get rid of it!’ Their O-line, they did a good job. I wasn’t getting much in the first half. Every time you win a rush and you look up and the ball is gone, it’s a little demoralizing. But I just kept going and I think our defense fought that whole second half. Came up very short this time.”

Joey Bosa is one of the best examples of a one-trick pony in the NFL.

If he wanted to play two ways, he would probably be quite good at it, but he totally sells out on the pass rush and gives up a lot of big plays because of it.

I don't know how they tell him to play D, so he might be doing exactly as instructed, but you'll never see a guy play like that here. You've gotta play the run or you won't be a Patriot.

It's going to hurt to see him leave. Going to be hard to replace that guy, unlike, say, Clayborn.

So just pay him.

Id rather see that and UDFA1 in place of Clayborn for minimum and UDFA2 in place of Allen for minimum.

This. I was just talking to my son about this yesterday. He is a wrecking crew, more than just getting pressure. He has all the weapons and durability.
