This was a major discovery, as prior to Hawkins, the prevailing theory was that black holes were massive gravitational attractors - things went into them but nothing ever came out.

But Hawkins showed this not to be the case, and the radiation emitted by black holes is named after him: Hawkins radiation.

And like all good discoveries, it has spawned more questions about cosmology, and stellar dynamics, and quantum mechanics.

All men must die, but Stephen Hawkins is one of those whose name and discoveries will live on.
Yeah his insight on this is so friken obvious, to physicists working in the field, that many of them had a moment when they first heard it.

In a sense, his brilliance was akin to how allegedly Einstein came up with Special Relativity.

Supposedly, Einstein asked the question: "What would happen if I was riding on a photon (particle of light) and shined a flashlight in front of me?

This lead to him postulating that the speed of light is the same, for all observers.

With regards to Hawking, he asked what would happen if a virtual particle pair was created near the event horizon of a Black Hole.

Virtual particles are part of Quantum Mechanics.

What are they?

Well I think most of you have some idea about what happens when matter and antimatter meet, from Star Trek if nothing else.

What happens is that they annihilate each other and one gets a bunch of energy. The amount is defined by Einstein's E=mc^2.

One thing one must understand is that it is a basic aspect of physics, that most things can happen in either direction.

So for example, that electric motor on your hybrid car can expend electricity from the battery to spin the wheel, or the wheel can spin the electric motor to charge the battery.

Note to the purists who have studied Thermogodamnics. I said "most things". I am well aware of Entropy and the "arrow of time".

So virtual particles are simply that matter - antimatter annihilation run in reverse.

So if you've got energy, you can create a particle/antiparticle pair.

The universe is full of energy, so this happens all the time.

They are called "virtual" because the vast majority particle/antiparticle pairs don't exist but for a fraction of a second and then they recombine and become energy again.

What Hawking asked, is what happens to such a pair that forms near the event horizon of a Black Hole.

There are three logical possibilities.

1) They both cross the event horizon and so have "fallen" into the Black Hole, never to be seen again.

2) They both move away from the event horizon and they will eventually meet and annihilate each other as any other virtual particle pair set does.

3) One crosses the event horizon, one moves away from the event horizon.

Hawking realized that now the one half of the virtual particle pair that was outside the Black Hole now no longer had a partner to annihilate with.

It had become "real".

He further realized that the primary source of energy, and hence virtual particle creation near a Black Hole was the gravitational field.

That gravitational field is defined by the mass of the Black Hole.

So this "Hawking radiation" would over time, decrease the mass of the Black Hole and eventually cause them to "evaporate".

Utterly simple, and thus utterly brilliant.

As far as "new questions", the most troubling/fascinating one is the so called "information paradox".

Resolving that question will have major impact on Quantum Mechanics, Grand Unified Theories, etc.

As much of a fan as I am, I never watched the movie until tonite....my thoughts? The actor portraying Hawking did a great job. I think the movie dwelled on the God thing too much...I just don't think it was that important to him. When people asked him, he would answer, but you never saw him hosting forums and debates about how God didn't exist....he just didn't need God in the equations....no more, and no less than that.

At any rate, I guess he knows the real answer now, as someday we all will.

Speaking for myself, if I die and meet God, and he gives me a look of disapproval, I'm going to say "Hey, you made me who I am, brother. I was just being me, just like you designed."

I have a family member always brooding about death and worrying about dying. It's a waste of life. It's like having a wonderful dog, and, knowing that the dog will die in less than 20 years, you spend all your time worrying over it rather than just appreciating the time you have with them. Don't waste it. Cross that bridge when you get to it.

Yeah. That was my take too. Don't get the reprimand. But we can discuss offline if you want. Feel free to message me.

the reprimand was preemptive, to stop the talk

the post basically said to feel free to carry it on in the already moved Billy Graham Thread that was moved for the same reason.
