New DE Keionta Davis

Patriots signed DE Keionta Davis out of Tenn-Chattanooga. Was graded a 4th round pick this year and was invited to the Senior Bowl. However he had a bulged disk in his neck and couldn't play in the Senior Bowl or workout at the combine.

Had 10.5 sacks and seven battered paaes, 3 forced fumbles and a blocked kick last year. Went undrafted and is now ready to play.

Yes, but can he rush the passer?

Oh, he can... now what?

So weird how a team with so many strengths can still have one glaring weakness.

That's strong.

I'd label a concern personally.

Long is gone, Sheard is gone, Nink retired, Ealy has underperformed to the point that some are wondering if he'll even make the team, and Wise got hurt. That's more than a concern.

I think things are setting up rather strongly for a Hightower to DE move.

Harris runs the middle.

So all we're looking for is depth. Ealy, Wise, Grissom, Rivers to eat a small percentage of reps High and Flowers don't play.

Not unlike a couple years back where Jones & Nink played almost every snap. But less than then.

An injury or 2 would hurt. But it's not panic.

Plus let's see the new kid.

Wow, if Harris can play three-down MLB and Hightower moves to DE opposite Flowers, we'd have awesome edge rushers. Hightower and Flowers made the best pass-rushing plays in the superbowl. I love Nink, but his pass rushing days were over a couple years ago. Wish they'd kept long, but he'd be playing behind Wise anyway so I'm not going to worry about the #4 option at end.

Long opted to move on. He had a role on a championship caliber team but chose to move for a larger role and more snaps.

Wonder if dad smacked him upside the head.

As far as Harris, I think they'd probably find a way to limit his reps a bit. Off in long pass downs?

But yes, when the cards were on the table Bill bookended High and Flowers. The results are history.

2017 Draft Prospects
GRADE
5.19
Photo of Keionta Davis
Keionta Davis (DE)
HT: 6'3" WT: 271LBS.
POSITION: DE
SCHOOL: Tennessee-Chattanooga
ARM LENGTH: 34"
HANDS: 9 1/2"
Overview
Davis could have left his hometown of Chattanooga to play major college football because of late FBS offers. He stayed with UTC, however, because they stuck with him after he suffered a knee injury his senior year of high school. Davis redshirted in 2012, contributed in 2013 (21 tackles, four for loss) and then became a second-team All-Southern Conference pick in 2014 (10.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, four forced fumbles). Scouts began to notice him in earnest as a junior, when he was a first-team All-SoCon pick and finished tied for second in the FCS with 13.5 sacks (17 total TFL). Davis had his second straight FCS All-American season in 2016, being credited with 10.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. NFL teams also saw him well quite well against Alabama early in the year (four tackles, 0.5 sack).
COMBINE STATS
ANALYSIS
Strengths
Good build in his lower half with a thick bubble. Frame is compact and powerful. Better arm length than expected. Has upper body strength to press out his punch and create separation with arm extension. Power to set a strong edge was too much for tackles in his conference. Has a good engine and is worker bee through his rep. Heavy tackler who lands chest-first. Built low to the ground and can leverage his way through re-direct blocks. Willing to do dirty work within the scheme to help open the door for teammates to make a play. Plays with quick, efficient hands. Excellent production.
Weaknesses
Lacks desired flexibility in lower body. Stiffness leads to shorter strides and a lack of range. Marginal reactive quickness and closing burst. Unable to crash down the line and catch downhill running backs in the backfield. Slow to unlock hips when changing direction. Square rusher who will be unable to get the hip turn or upper body torque slip around the edge as an NFL rusher. Lacks twitch for sudden burst necessary on his inside rush counters. Has issues dealing with long-armed tackles who get on top of him early. Rarely challenged by NFL tackles.
Draft Projection
Rounds 6-7
Bottom Line
Davis is well built with adequate power at the point of attack and outstanding college production, but he may lack the twitch and fluidity in space to make his mark as an edge player. He has some play traits that could make him an upfield three-technique if he could pile on enough weight, but he doesn't appear to have a clean position fit. He does, however, have enough ability to find his way onto a roster if a team has a plan for him.

Bill ALWAYS has a plan.

BB worked out Keionta Davis himself this past March giving credence to the theory that private workouts by coaches are of utmost importance.
(if there's a survey at the link just say 'no' to the first question and the survey is over)

Interestingly, Demarcus Covington, former UTC LB coach, joined the Patriots coaching staff recently.

Davis will wear #51 which is purely a LB number. 2017 is widely thought to be a redshirt/rehab year for Davis.

He could be used both outside and inside.

Me thinks that some are making too much of this. He's a guy that was on the Patriots radar scree for a while but needed to be cleared medically. They cut a DB who was not going to make the team to make room for him.

If the DB's are as good as we think, then there will be coverage sacks. You don't need "sack artist" in order to apply pressure. And, we have all learned that the final 53 is not the end. BB will try to trade for a player if he thinks a position needs improvement.

It speaks volumes of how deep this team really is. DE is said to be "weak".

Yet it has two established veteran stars as starters, Flowers and Hightower, a third who is an ex-starter on a Super bowl club, Ealy, and three high picks. Rivers, Grissom and Wise, who are trying to establish them selves.

If this is a glaring a weakness, then what pray tell is a strength?
