He was really pretty good at it too. Took a moribund Great White North Independent in Syracuse to 11-0-1 and a #4 ranking in 1987.

Those MacPherson/Bicknell matchups in the 80s were always appointment TV.

Last game of the year was a stunning 32-31 win over West Virginia and Major Harris, where coach Mac went for the 2-point conversion and the win after an Orange touchdown had SU trailing 31-30. Preserved the undefeated season and I saw it in person. We lost our minds and stormed the field. Amazing sports moment.

He had incredible stones to make that call.

8-24, yes, but did two things.

1) Gave Patriots fans a reason to give a shit again after the 1-15 season in 1990. Remember, they were a shocking 6-10 in 1991, with MacPherson taking bums like Hugh Millen across the line for several close wins. 1992 was a step back, sort of, but there were "the team is moving" rumors, and ownership issues and all that - along with the regressing of the mean to their talent, of which there was very, very little.

2) Kept the chair warm for Janckovich to somehow talk Bill Parcells into coming here, AND was able to secure the #1 pick, which was Drew Bledsoe.

Dick MacPherson's role in keeping the Patriots in Foxboro will be forgotten in time, but he did the best he could with his own limitations (and option college coach at Syracuse), and the limitations of the talent he was given.

This is what I mean about a team devoid of talent. You've got a checked out Irving Fryar, Andre Tippett, Bruce Armstrong, Ronnie Lippett, the last year of Freddy Smerlas, what was left of Freddie Marion, and depending on whether you thought Vincent Brown was actually good, or was just decent on a terrible team. And that's about it.

Waaaay too much Leonard Russell, Jon Vaughn and Greg McMurtry highlights. Also lots of Zo in a baseball cap.

Oh, that Oilers team they beat was 11-5, won the AFC Central, and blew a late 4th quarter lead in Denver in the playoffs. That was a legit team.

Dick was a medioce coach on a team with limited capabilities.

What I'll always remember about him was his enthusiasm. Holy crap. He was like Pete Carrol, but in a grandfatherly way.

Always seemed like a super nice guy in interviews, and the players liked him.

Godspeed, Dick. Thanks for some really fun memories in the Patriot Dark Ages.

I was already in Maryland at the time, and this was way before the extensive sports media coverage that exists today. I have a sense of McPherson coaching the Pats, but that's really about it. There was about a 5 year stretch at one point where, aside from playing the Redskins or Cowboys, I could count the number of times I saw Pats games on TV on one hand.

I prefer things the way they are now.

Patriots home games were often, if not usually, blacked out on TV back then. I used to love when they were on the road because I could actually watch them on TV.

Another thing that comes to mind....Hugh Millen used to take a beating playing for Pats. I wouldn't so much about him getting hurt, I was worried about him getting killed!

The Pats' O-Line was not great.

I hated when they were blacked out, we would have to find a place to watch the games. Usually a Chinese joint on Route One.

This is an impressive understatement.

Bruce Armstrong and a revolving four bags of suck. Including 1st round bust Pat Harlow.
