He was also the governor of New York prior to being elected as the vice president. Held quite a few other elected offices as well.

I honestly don't see any comparison between the two

Teddy was a genuine celebrity, partly for San Juan, but for many other things as well....being a hunter and explorer, all kinds of stuff. He's the reason we have "Teddy Bears".

Teddy Roosevelt was larger than life. The comparison isn't all that off base. He was far, far, far more celebrity than he was politician.

He was asst secretary of the Navy when the war broke out. He ended up as the VP because at the time it was a dead end job and the party bosses wanted to get rid of him.

Honestly, I'm not seeing these comparisons you guys are trying to shoehorn in here.

We're talking about the 1912 campaign. At least, I am.

Roosevelt was a former president, and a gigantic celebrity. He did not get the Republican nomination, and the banksters wanted Woodrow Wilson in so they financed Roosevelt to run as third party and split the vote between Taft and Roosevelt, thereby getting Wilson elected.

With Wilson they got everything they wanted to transform the country in their vision. The 16th amendment to impose income taxes, the 17th amendment to shift power from the states to Washington, the Federal Reserve Act to take the power of government issuing it's own currency away and give to the banks, collateralized by the 16th amendment, and a Great War to force the government to borrow huge sums from the banksters at interest.

We're still paying for that election, and our children and grandchildren will be, too.

As Adam Smith said....There is a great deal of ruin in a nation.

Let me get this straight.

The discussion was about celebrity status propelling an individual to the presidency rather than qualification, and your example is a campaign run by a man who at the time had already served two terms as President among several other elected positions?

Wait: Nevermind, I see this was just a springboard for some (((globalist))) conspiracy theory rant. Carry on.

Teddy had quite a bit more political experience than Oprah and Donald combined.

They're all actors...playing president.

Dubya fooled all of you. He isn't really that dumb. Trump is also playing his part well.

And yes...Woodrow Wilson is dipshit. But, if he didn't do it, someone else would have taken his place.

America is a corporation.

Teddy had a fame and celebrity status that probably can't be equated to anyone today. He was hugely famous before he ever got elected to anything.

I don't think we have any comparisons today in America. Teddy wasn't just a war hero, and wasn't just a well known ex-president, he was a world famous explorer and adventurer in an age here adventurers were the subject of rag magazines and newspaper stories worldwide.

I would say the only American presidents with his stature of fame were George Washington and Andrew Jackson....and Teddy probably topped both of them.

I agree that it's not entirely the same thing, but he became Governor of NY and then was quickly put on McKinley's 1900 ticket because he'd gotten massive press from the Cuba invasion. Hearst & Pulitzer fought each other for circulation selling that war.

What makes it more of a bad example is that Roosevelt had previous experience in public office. When he was the police commissioner in NYC before the war, he created the police academy and their first firearms training program.

But, it was his celebrity, not any organizational experience, that got him to high office.

I mentioned it in the context of 1900, not 1912.

Baron, however, was not which is baffling.

Even in 1900 it was more about party bosses trying to get rid of him, as the Vice President was seen as a dead end at the time.

Then McKinley died.

I get it though he was a larger than life personality. Most presidents are. But that's not comparable to Trump or Oprah who have no experience in politics which is strangely part of the appeal.

By the way, I'd happily vote for TR in 2020.
