Well, the old adage that if stamp collecting is a hobby, is not stamp collecting a hobby?

But yeah, once you get into the realm of missionary work, preaching, and proselytizing, you have yourself a genuine religion. If travelling hte country and the world to speak to audiences about it isn't missionary work, I don't know what is.

I don't believe in the Loch Ness monster, but I don't feel the need to "spread the word" and preach and proselytize about it.

That's the difference.

Unbelief is not the same thing as atheism. Unbelief, you just don't believe and don't spend time worrying over it. Atheism, you preach and proselytize and criticise conflicting faiths just like any other religion.

Appropos of nothing:

Personally, I think Atheists provide a valuable counter-resource to the legions of people, both well-intentioned and not, who want me to believe that an omniscient thunderer in the clouds gives a shit about me. Somebody has to step up the plate to tell folks that it isn't just Santa who is a human construct.

I grew up as a kid who was in the Catholic brainwash program and even at 6 or 7 I had the strong feeling that it was all a crock of crap and that was before all the sanctioned diddling or my even knowing what diddling was.

There was a time they managed to make me feel guilty about that, but I eventually moved past the trained response. Now, I just feel minor sadness that humans have never really come up with a decent explanation for their own existence despite a lot of trying. We just don't really have any idea and that's going to have to be OK, I suppose.

The most successful part of all of this enormous expenditure of human energy and resources is that I think that if we didn't have the program and the Bible with the Commandments and all that then the human race might more closely resemble Mad Max: Fury Road than it does presently, so I thank the God/Jesus people for that much, I suppose. That could be about the only thing they got right, but it's a biggie.

So, the Bible does really giveth while it taketh away, but I'm grateful for the myth so I can go to the gas station without carrying a spear gun.

You would have a hard time packing more nonsense into a single post if you tried.

First, non-belief is atheism. That's it. Whether people choose to share their view is a separate issue entirely.

Just as important, the reason you don't challenge Nessies is that that unfounded belief isn't ubiquitous, influencing government, health care, and societal health in general. If they did, I suspect you'd push back a little. Or, at least, you should.

For someone who isn't particularly religious, you sure do buy into a lot of pre-packaged bullshit believers spread about atheism.

Allow me to suggest that anyone wanting to have a legitimate dialog about this topic watch this video, if only to actually understand the other side of the discussion.

Ahh I see.

What I think we should mean when we say "God" is "the thing an individual believes to be of greatest importance."

That is way more useful IMO than "Santa Claus in the clouds."

Incorrect.

Non-belief in God does not exclude atheism from being a religion. It is.

I don't believe in ghosts, or UFO's, or bigfoot, but neither do I proselytize, preach, or feel the need to "spread the gospel" about it.

The mistake atheists make is that they think there is a difference between them and Jehova Witnesses because of what they want to say when they knock on the door or pop off about their beliefs in a social setting without being asked. They think that because they are preaching a different gospel, that somehow that makes them not a religion.

Belief in God has nothing to do with it....if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck, no matter the color of the feathers. Atheists quack as loud or louder than any churchgoing folks I know.

It's your behavior that makes it a religion, not your belief.

EDIT: The very fact that it's so important for me to understand what is going on in your head sort of proves the point.

Until one realizes secular religions have been just as guilty of atrocity as non-secular ones.

Whether it's a communist purge or the Inquisition, the Genesis for that behavior comes from the same place.

Your usage is so poorly defined as to have no utility (at least for this conversation). If my children are of greatest importance to me, does that make me a theist?

I don't know how to respond to this. You are confoundingly ignorant about this subject while being impervious to reason. Perhaps most troubling is your seeming eagerness to remain uninformed.

For the time being, I guess I'll have to let you prattle on and engage with other members who are open to dialog. FWIW, this only applies to this subject, I still value your contributions to other topics.

I have no issue with atheism or any other system of beliefs. My main issue from my own experience is people in general do not put the work in to come to any sort of sane conclusion about things of both temporal and eternal significance. They can rattle off Brady's stats for the last 17 years BUT when you ask them about issues of God, eternity, morality, you get "I dunno." I respect Baron, Oswlek and Jaric and even though we disagree on matters of faith. They have put in a ton of work and have come to a different point of view.

BTW, Christianity has done a ton of GOOD too. But we tend to only focus on the bad to enforce our set of conclusions.

The distinction you are looking for is dogmatism. Every "secular" religion (to continue this ill-usage) placed their government leaders in deistic positions.

When more proper distinctions are made, secular societies demonstrate consistently superior health by virtually every factor, from education, to murder rates, to teenage pregnancies.

It's not a stretch for me to imagine the Christians on the board starting a thread called "The Christian Experience", posting a bunch of videos of Billy Graham and some others, and the atheists on the board rejecting the notion....I wonder what the Christians might say to your posts?

...something like "just watch the videos because you are confoundingly ignorant about the subject, and you seem eager to remain uninformed."

Two sides, one coin. At least the Christians admit it.
