Of course they do. Dead killers make great ex post facto martyrs.

If nothing else, what this has shown me is that people hear gunshots, they run for cover.

People don't hear gunshots, they could die in an attack like this.

Silencers will go to the House this week. There is not one reason on earth why these should be made legal. Not one.

They are fairly easy to make from everyday items...the bad guys don't bother to follow rules anyway.

Probably?

No, it's an absolute certainty, and by a large margin.

There are ~40K fatalities in car accidents every year in the US.

Quote:
If the estimates are confirmed, it will be the first time since 2007 that more than 40,000 people have died in motor vehicle accidents in a single year. The 2016 total comes after a 7 percent rise in 2015 and means the two-year increase — 14 percent — is the largest in more than a half a century.
More than 2 million are injured.

Quote:
Nearly 2.3 million “serious injuries,” which the NSC defines as those requiring medical consultation,
How many people are killed or injured per year in these types of attacks?

According to this article, 92 people were killed over a two year span in 2014 and 2015.

But let's just say 100 people a year are killed by such events.

That means you're 400 times more likely to get killed in a car crash than by an active shooter.

Yes, I know an active shooter is perceived as "greater risk" because it hits both factors that influence the perception of risk: Control and numbers.

The level of risk people think is acceptable or unacceptable is directly proportional to the perceived level of control.

If they think they have more control, they will accept a higher risk and think it isn't really more of a risk.

The number of victims also plays a role. An event that is very very rare, but has a high body count, is viewed as a higher risk than an event that is much more common, but has a lower body count, for any given incident.

It doesn't matter if the total body count exceeds the other, since one typically isn't aware of all those large number of events that cause casualties, but one does hear about the big number event.

There's nothing wrong with maintaining situational awareness and being prepared to get the frack out of Dodge when required (and to when to get the frack out of Dodge), but it doesn't do you any good to misrepresent the risks with any given action you take.

If you don't think that driving is the most dangerous thing you routinely do, you're kidding yourself.

Especially with idiots "multitasking" such as sleeping, texting, picking up dropped items from the floor, eating, drinking, switching out cd's, etc.

I don't know that that is comforting. We've had hundreds of years and all we've really accomplished is to put a sheen of civilization on stuff

Look, I'm bummed about Vegas too, but this is simply not true.

By nearly any relative measurement life is significantly better now than it was a couple hundred years ago.

Yeah, my Twitter timeline is filled with woke 8 year olds asking "Daddy/Mommy, why doesn't the government enact common sense gun legislation? Why won't they stand up to the NRA?" and a combination of joyful glee over the killing of what statistically are probably Republicans/Trump voters at the hands of a non-muslim.

Probably a good time to remind ourselves that while these kind of tragedies do have a unifying effect, they also bring out the ghouls and its usually the hottest of takes that get amplified.

People use them to help prevent hearing loss.

A gunshot with a silencer is still in the 130 decibel range which is on par with being about 50 feet away from a military jet takeoff from an aircraft carrier with an afterburner. A jackhammer is in the 100 db range.
