The Decline and Fall of the US Dollar

I have been trumpeting htis horn for a couple of years now...

..but the pieces are beginning to fall into place.

This is a large and very real step in the direction of removing the Dollar as the world's trade currency.

The signs have been there, as other nations have been dumping their US Treasury Bonds and buying up Gold.

This, however, is significant because it is a bold and public statement about what direction the growing nations are moving in.

BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Move to Unseat US Dollar as Trade Currency

SOUTH Africa will this week take some initial steps to unseat the US dollar as the preferred worldwide currency for trade and investment in emerging economies.

Thus, the nation is expected to become party to endorsing the Chinese currency, the renminbi, as the currency of trade in emerging markets.

This means getting a renminbi-denominated bank account, in addition to a dollar account, could be an advantage for African businesses that seek to do business in the emerging markets.

The move is set to challenge the supremacy of the US dollar. This, experts say, is the latest salvo in the greatest worldwide currency war since the 1930s.

In the 1930s, several nations competitively devalued their currencies to give their domestic economies an advantage over others.

And this led to a worldwide decline in overall trade volumes at the time.

The north will be pitted against the entire south in a historic competitive currency battle – whose terrain has moved to the Indian capital New Dehli – where the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India China and South Africa) nations will assemble next week.

China seeks to find new markets for its currency and to lobby to internationalise it throughout the Brics states.

For China this is not a new game. In 2009, senior Chinese banking officials issued a statement that the international monetary system was flawed owing to an unhealthy dependence on the US dollar and called for a “super-sovereign” international reserve currency.

Experts say Beijing’s first step is to internationalise its currency (by expanding its reach beyond China), liberalise it (to allow its value to be determined by the market instead of actively managing it as they currently do) and then make it a reserve currency for many nations in the developing world.

Africa’s largest bank, Standard Bank, says in a research document: “We expect at least $100bn (about R768bn) in Sino-African trade – more than the total bilateral trade between China and Africa in 2010 – to be settled in the renminbi by 2015.”

The bank anticipates that the use of the renminbi will lower transaction costs in Africa, thus lowering the barriers to doing business.

It also says that the Chinese will be more successful in transacting in renminbi in Africa than anywhere else because most currencies are weak and somewhat localised.

Not only will the US dollar be challenged, but also the entire international financial regime – led by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund – which has been dominant since the end of World War II.

South Africa’s place in the emerging international financial regime is set to be enhanced.

Zou Lixing, vice-president of the Institute of Research of the China Development Bank, told the Brics preparatory meeting recently that “although the economic aggregate of South Africa is small relative to the Brics, South Africa provides a gate for the Brics to get access to the huge African market”.

The five-member nations have collectively called for an end to the tacit agreement between the US and Europe that ensures that the head of the World Bank is an American citizen, and the International Monetary Fund head is European.

They have proposed that an emerging market candidate be fielded when the term of the current World Bank head, Robert Zoellick, expires in three months.

Fundacao Vargas, a member of the Brazilian delegation, said Brics could confront “existing governance structures”, and seek to strengthen the bloc's influence in established institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, while creating alternatives.

The demand for greater political say in international affairs dovetails with China’s expected rise as a financial superpower in the next eight years.

Vargas showed the preparatory meeting projections indicating that China’s economy will have eclipsed that of the US by 2020, hence the promotion of the renminbi as the preferred currency of the south.

The renminbi has traditionally traded at a deliberately lower exchange rate, which gave a huge boost to China’s domestic economic sectors and enabled its booming industrialisation and growth.

The US and other trading partners have long accused China of being a “currency manipulator”.

Last week, Brazil declared its commitment to keep its own currency – the real – low. Its Finance Minister, Guido Mantega, reiterated his November 2010 declaration that a global currency war has broken out.

He said: “We do not want to lose our manufacturing sector.

"We will not sit back and watch while other countries devalue their currencies.”

Brazil and China cried foul last year when, through a slew of initiatives dubbed QE2 – quantitative easing Two – the US indirectly devalued its currency by pumping about $600bn into its economy to protect the economy from sliding back into recession.

South African economists were in two minds about the moves to extend the influence of the renminbi.

Economist and academic Peter Draper told City Press recently that the decision to establish a Brics development bank and to enlarge the renminbi's sphere “is political and related to the current political dynamics within the World Bank” and the established international financial system.

Tom Wheeler of the South African Institute of International Affairs said developments in New Delhi (India) were “giving substance to the previously (and) loosely arranged economic bloc”.

Brics flay West over monetary policy, IMF

New Delhi - Leaders of the Brics group of emerging market nations pressed Western powers to cede more voting rights at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) this year, and flayed the rich world’s reflationary monetary policies for putting global economic stability in jeopardy.

“This dynamic process of reform is necessary to ensure the legitimacy and effectiveness of the fund,” Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa said in a joint declaration after their one-day summit in New Delhi.

“We stress that the ongoing effort to increase the lending capacity of the IMF will only be successful if there is confidence that the entire membership of the institution is truly committed to implement the 2010 reform faithfully.”

Promised changes to voting rights at the IMF have yet to be ratified by the United States, adding to frustration over reform of the G7 and the United Nations Security Council, where India and Brazil have been angling for years for permanent seats.

The Brics leaders also accused rich countries of destabilising the world economy five years into the global financial crisis.

“It is critical for advanced economies to adopt responsible macroeconomic and financial policies, avoid creating excessive global liquidity and undertake structural reforms to lift growth that create jobs,” they said in a joint declaration.

The rich world’s monetary policy “brings enormous trade advantages to developed countries, and results in unfair obstacles for other countries”, Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff said at the summit.

Security was tight in New Delhi, days after an activist set himself on fire in protest at Chinese rule in Tibet, dying from his injuries just hours before China’s President Hu Jintao arrived. Police grappled with small groups of pro-Tibet protesters.

Iran's nuclear rights

The declaration said the crisis over Iran’s nuclear programme should be resolved diplomatically and should not be allowed to escalate. It also recognised the right of Iran to pursue peaceful nuclear energy.

“We agreed that lasting solution to the problems in Syria and Iran can only be found through dialogue,” Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.

The five Brics nations, which collectively account for nearly half the world’s population and a fifth of its economic output, signed an agreement to extend credit facilities in their local currencies, a step aimed at reducing the role of the dollar in trade between them.

They also agreed to examine in greater detail an Indian proposal to set up a Brics-led South-South Development Bank, funded and managed by the Brics and other developing countries.

“We have directed the finance ministers to examine the proposal and report back at the next summit,” Singh said.

Other moves to bring their economies closer together include the launch on Friday of benchmark equity index derivatives allowing investors in one Brics country to bet on the performance of stock markets in the other four members without currency risk.

The indexes will be cross-listed on their stock exchanges from Friday.

BRICS agree to local currency credits to ease dollar dependency

The BRICS - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - have agreed to provide credit to each other in local currencies. Officials say the deal will facilitate economic growth in times of crisis.
*The currency swap deal is aimed at promoting trade and investment in local currencies as well as to cut transaction costs. It’s also seen as a step to replace the dollar as a reserve currency in trade between BRICS.

“The idea is in line with many interests and economic exigencies in the world economy,” Yaroslav Lissovolik, the chief economist at Deutsche Bank told RT. “The euro and dollar are no longer seen as unquestionable monopolies in the role of reserve currencies. Clearly the world needs more reserve currencies.”

The deal would also increase the BRICS influence on the international arena and will make their cooperation less sensitive to sanctions from the West, experts say.
"The BRICS countries are in the first rank to do the job that international financial system now needs. What the BRICS said was a very welcomed wake up call," John Kirton, the Co-Director of the BRICS Reasearch Group told RT.

Russia and China have been trading in the rouble and yuan for several years, now Russia plans to expand local currency settlement with India.

“With China it took us three years to (evolve) from initial conversations to trading in local currencies,” Vladimir Dmitriev, the chairman of Russia’ s VEB told reporters. “I think we will meet similar terms with India”.

Meanwhile the swap requires a lot of technical work by each country such as the synchronization of national banking legislation, according to Mr. Dmitriev.
The BRICS countries are also going to announce plans on a joint development bank which is considered a possible rival to the World Bank and the IMF. If established, it would function as a lending agency and would provide finance for joint BRICS projects.
"They made it very clear it would be built to benefit not only BRICS countries themselves, but developing countries more broadly," said KIrton. "But the big message was to give the World Bank more resources, only then would they see how the BRICS bank would fit in the supplement what they’ve already got."

Demand for U.S. Debt Is Not Limitless
In 2011, the Fed purchased a stunning 61% of Treasury issuance. That can't last..

The conventional wisdom that nearly infinite demand exists for U.S. Treasury debt is flawed and especially dangerous at a time of record U.S. sovereign debt issuance.

The recently released Federal Reserve Flow of Funds report for all of 2011 reveals that Federal Reserve purchases of Treasury debt mask reduced demand for U.S. sovereign obligations. Last year the Fed purchased a stunning 61% of the total net Treasury issuance, up from negligible amounts prior to the 2008 financial crisis. This not only creates the false appearance of limitless demand for U.S. debt but also blunts any sense of urgency to reduce supersized budget deficits.

Still, the outdated notion of never-ending buyers for U.S. debt is perpetuated by many. For instance, in recent testimony before the Senate Budget Committee, former Federal Reserve Board Vice Chairman Alan Blinder said, "If you look at the markets, they're practically falling over themselves to lend money to the federal government." Sadly, that's no longer accurate.

It is true that the U.S. government has never been more dependent on financial markets to pay its bills. The net issuance of Treasury securities is now a whopping 8.6% of gross domestic product (GDP) on average per annum-more than double its pre-crisis historical peak. The net issuance of Treasury securities to cover budget deficits has typically been a mere 0.6% to 3.9% of GDP on average for each decade dating back to the 1950s.

But in recent years foreigners and the U.S. private sector have grown less willing to fund the U.S. government. As the nearby chart shows, foreign purchases of U.S. Treasury debt plunged to 1.9% of GDP in 2011 from nearly 6% of GDP in 2009. Similarly, the U.S. private sector-namely banks, mutual funds, corporations and individuals-have reduced their purchases of U.S. government debt to a scant 0.9% of GDP in 2011 from a peak of more than 6% in 2009.

The Fed is in effect subsidizing U.S. government spending and borrowing via expansion of its balance sheet and massive purchases of Treasury bonds. This keeps Treasury interest rates abnormally low, camouflaging the true size of the budget deficit. Similarly, the Fed is providing preferential credit to the U.S. government and covering a rapidly widening gap between Treasury's need to borrow and a more limited willingness among market participants to supply Treasury with credit.

I don't have the subscription, so this is the only portion of the article I was able to drum up...but it gets the point across....

We are printing money because we can't get loans.

The average American could care less about the currency.

They just blame "the government" and buy more beer rather then baby formula.

No one wants to make the hard choices and deal with reality. Better that it hits us like a heart attack so we don't have a choice in the matter.

Well, that's not going to stop me from trying to make hay with it.

Your comparison is an excellent example of the results of mass media programming.

Americans obsess over inane topics and roll their eyes at the real news, the real issues.

They are taught that way.

The media informs them of "what is important" and "what is not important"..via coverage time and subtle suggestion, and Americans respond or do not respond in the desired fashion.

"OK..so there is something going on in the world that is too complicated for me and too boring......what's Lindsey Lohan up to this week?"

The BRICS will drop Bricks on the USD

One of the biggest developments that will occur with the new BRICS Bank is the promotion of the 5 countries to conduct trade in their own currencies, avoiding the USD as the Global reserve currency.

The leaders of BRICs nations and other emerging market nations have adopted the plan of conducting trade between the 5 nations in their own currencies, 2 agreements, signed among the development banks of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, say that local currency loans will be made available for trade between these countries only.

Trading in local currencies will also allow the BRICS to hedge their foreign exchange reserves against the uncertainties facing the USD and Euro.

Many countries are already hedging by purchasing Gold. According to the latest data from the World Gold Council, central banks purchased a net total of 440 tons of Gold in Y 2011, compared to just 77 tons in the prior year.

That was the largest amount of net purchases by central banks since Y 1964.

Russia was a large buyer of Gold, adding around 95 tons in Y 2011. China is believe to have bought 500 tons of Gold last year. In Y 2009, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) confirmed that it had nearly doubled its Gold reserves since Y 2004, after secretly purchasing significant amounts of the precious Yellow metal.

With emerging markets increasing the use of local currencies and Gold holdings, the possibility is now that some currencies may have some form of a Gold peg or Standard.

As the BRICS and other countries raise concerns about the currencies of developed nations such as the US and EU, it is hard to imagine that Gold will not have a larger role in International trade.

The US Federal Reserve’s current Zero interest rate policy is hurting the “Greenback” and future quantitative easing (QE) programs will only add to the downward pressure IMO.

The Greek debt tragedy is coming back into focus. It was reported Monday that investors in Greek bonds issued under foreign law did not accept recently made restructuring attempts.

The closest maturity date on the international bonds is 15 May, when holders of a 450-M Euro floating rate note are due payments. Greece’s inability to pay on the note could easily spark more EuroZone fears, adding even more allure to safe-havens such as Gold and Silver, + pressuring the USD further. Stay tuned…

It's about Bread and Circus. Making all the necessary changes in spending and our currency will greatly affect both their bread and circus.....today.

That's all people care about....today......bread....circus. Do I have my house? Do I have my car/truck? Do I have my football? Do I have my beer?
If the answer is "yes" then that's all most people care about and you're not going to convince them to relinquish their "bread and circus" without a fight.
This was the reason that the upper Roman classes called people like this...."the mob". Things are no different today except that "the mob" ultimately controls the purse strings as it keeps electing "representatives" who will give them their bread and circus (while taking a little for themselves and their "friends"...but hey, that's ok).

So keep sounding the alarm.....I do the same. But I have zero expectation that people will listen until they are forced to listen.

Wisdom can be obtained without suffering. It just takes humility, patience, and a decent work ethic none of which "the mob" possesses nor desires in any way, shape, or form.

"Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties;" for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses."

- Juvenal circa 100 A.D.

That's not true.

Many members of the mob possess amazing work ethics. They just don't understand the complexities of international monetary finance. That doesn't make them bad people, just ignorant.

However, by and large, we only learn things by first screwing them up. That true for the mob or the people who lead the mob.

They aren't willing to learn and to sacrifice in the short term. They listen to people who tell them what they want to hear rather than what they know to be true because the truth will force them to change their lives. That's humility and patience.
Wisdom doesn't require suffering. Suffering can be a gateway to wisdom because it forces us into humility but it isn't necessary to come to wisdom.

Human history suggests otherwise.

Yeah, there are outliers, but by and large we have to **** something up before we learn our lessons, and even then we rarely learn (exhibit A is our current Middle East Boondoggles)
