3 Verts 1

This first look at 3 Verts was run against the Colts in Indy. Itís pretty simple. The Pats wanted to take a deep shot so they send three deep and protect with 7. They put the Colts into a run heavy group to aid the pass pro then motioned Gray out wide to the offenseís left. The Colts covered Gray with a CB indicating that this was a zone coverage. The Coltís counter with a hydrid zone, Cover 2 to one side and Cover 4 to the other. The CB aligned on LaFell is manned up for all intents and purposes.

Brady wants nothing to do with Gray working against a CB and passes up a double covered Gronk as Brady knows the Cov 4 safety will sit on him over the top. If this safety was also in Cov 2 and vacated to the deep half, Brady would have had a nice Gronk adjustment down the MOF but he didnít get it. This leaves LaFell working against a man CB and a deep half safety. If LaFell beat the CB and gets deep Brady could throw a rope in the hole between the Safety and the CB like he did against the Ravens in the play-offs but that doesnít happen here. Instead Brady goes back shoulder where there was no help for the CB for an impressive completion.

Here we see the middle route dig up under the Cov 4 Dual Safety look. Brady has his choice of the outside throw to the Dig or the RB in the Flat. In this case he didnít like what he saw downfield so he checked down for a short gain.

Four Verticals

Four Verts is a far more common concept especially in the college and high school games. There are many teams that build their entire pass game around this concept and its variations.

There are NFL teams that make heavy use of the concept as well but the Pats are not a big Four Vertical team tending to use it and companion concepts with similar route stems to get down the field in a hurry during two minute situations. There are some coaches who build their entire two minute offense around the Four Verts because of its deep routes, versatility and solid six man protection.

The famous Texas Tech upset of Texas in 2008 was engineered thru Texas Techís exclusive use of this concept on the last drive of the game resulting in Michael Crabtreeís game winning touchdown.

This concept originated in the Run & Shoot Offense which is known for it's adjustable route patterns.

The Pats will attach one half on the concept (two verts) to other concepts as we have already seen more often than using the full concept which typically gives them a deep throw option against zone and a man beater opposite against man if needed.

The concept is very similar to Fade/Seam with deeper routes and throws. Two outside receivers run Go/Comeback read routes and two inside receivers run inside deep seams one of which will convert to the coverage while the other will usually stay static. It can be run from 2x2 or 3x1 with a simple route adjustment. The RB will check release to a low drag under the conversion Seam Route to occupy a LB or check down.

Against Cov three the outside receivers will read the leverage of the covering CBs and either stick to their Go route or will break down to the Comeback. The Seams will stay high down the Seams.

Against Dual Safety coverage the Seams will dig or bend based on Safety leverage.

Against man the QB will find his best match-up and work the deep ball over the shoulder or go back shoulder on deep routes and will hit the Comeback if the CB has leverage over the top.

This Four Vertical against the Dolphins during last yearís opener was run against the Finís 2 Deep Man coverage. The call was to the right where you see Gronk start to Dig against the Dual Safety look which sets up an inside Hi-Lo with the RB weíre pretty familiar with now. The static Seam on the left held that safety on the Post though which gave Brady Lafell one on one against a press corner which he tried to take advantage of without success.

This is the same concept run against the Finís Man free (Cov 1) middle of the field closed look where the two Seams will stay high. Brady and the receivers must be on the same page as route conversions must happen in concert with each other. It is too late if Brady sees then reacts to the conversion they must be on the same page. Here at 15 yards the receiver and CB were pretty even setting up a deep throw rather than a comeback. Brady could have back shouldered this ball though as the CB does have slight leverage. It looks like he may have tried to as the CB did play it as a back shoulder throw.

This another look at 4 Verts against the Dolphins this time at home. The Fins close the MOF in Man Free setting up two deep Seams which Brady wants to exploit. This is a game plan hash deal here where the Pats are using the attached TE deep set RB formation to get Miami to put an extra man in the box to defend the run who has dual responsibility to cover Gronk man up giving Gronk a nice outside release to his landmark for his vertical route which is the bottom of the numbers.

They know from their scouts that the Safety will be MOF. They use Play-action, Gronk gains the easy release against a man defender with no leverage, and Brady freezes the Safety in the MOF with his eyes until Gronk gains leverage then he hits him in the void with a nice touch pass high enough to get there but low enough to keep the Safety from impacting the throw.

On the snap you can see how far inside Gronkís man defender is and the release this gives him from the TE spot. The Safety has to back pedal as well while Brady freezes him. Gronk has gained leverage by about 7 yards downfield and now Brady just needs to touch the ball in there.

This is one last look at the concept run against the Lions who were using a hybrid coverage. This is another game plan deal where the Pats know from their scouts that the Lions like to package Man 2 and cover zero against certain looks which we see here.

The Lions are playing Man 2 to the single receiver side initially and zero man to the four receiver side as the Pats had initially aligned in a 4x1 look including the RB. This is a tough cover because the Pats can throw a singled up route to the left, run the ball inside on IZ or Power or throw a three/four man pattern to the left.

The Lions do not want to risk a single throw beating them so they set up a half field safety to the single receiver side. They also want to maintain a plus one in the run game so they go zero opposite the Man 2 to gain a six man box. This means one on ones for the four receiver side. Brady sees what they've done expecting it and audibles sending Gronk across the formation taking his man defender with him and leaving an over-matched man defender one on one with Edelman running a seam route with no safety help in sight. The Pats packaged Levels here with the Verts which is run to Edelmanís side. Brady has his choice and chooses wisely looking to hit Edelman down the field.

The first pic shows the Gronk motion to 2x2 and then the resultant Zero look Brady wants to pick on. Edelman stutter steps the man defender leaving him in a loose trail position giving Brady a ton of room to work while the Safety attempts to get across the field to impact the throw. Heís late and Edelman makes a diving attempt on the overthrown ball. The plan was solid. The protection sound, the routes perfect but the throw was just a little off killing the whole deal but itís a nice look at what the Patís are trying to do in the concept package game.

I'm placing this article by Zach Moore of Overthecap.com so it doesn't get lost. It explains why BB has chosen the slot WR as the primary focus of his offensive philosophy and how that morphed into also using RBs as slot receivers. It also goes into great detail about BB's cap philosophy.

AWTE, could you do a "Patriots pass defense" or "Patriots run defense" series this season?

Thanks for all you have done so far!

Thank you. I haven't managed to even finish this thread yet! I don't have access to new game film film right now but if I get into the games this fall I'll throw some observations up I'm sure.
