BB usually place the tag to make time to make a long term deal. I hope this would indicate they are not to far apart in negotiations.

Wild conjecture by Rosenthal imo. He offers no evidence or "sources". He only spins his reasoning that "letting him walk could be catastrophic". There have been no reports of contract talks with him and you can bet BB isn't leaking this FT stuff. I'm not buying it.

I'm sure the Pats want to re-sign him but the $16-17M/ for the FT is reserved for players like Olivier Vernon and JJWatt. The Pats are tight with cap space at $15M and while cap space can be generated to get it done, it would create a tight situation for signing other players going forward. A long term deal at $13M/ seems far more reasonable.

I agree chev. Flowers is excellent. Love his game. As a Patriot, how the Patriots use him. Do I think it translates? No, not everywhere. He’s being maximized by a very cerebral coach. I don’t think he goes many other places and garners the same success. They’ll get their shiny new toy. They’ll line him up. And they’ll say “Go!” and expect Bosa, Miller, Vernon type production. He isn’t that. He doesn’t have that getoff. He’s a space eating run pass defender with the ability to get home at times. He’s not that blistering around the edge low bend sack specialist.
Unfortunately that’s what the tag is, despite him not being that player.

They really should have a more distinct categorization of player for tag purposes.

I think going somewhere else his sack totals would be bigger. Look at Jones. He is asked to a ton here, so I am not sure its just the coaches that make him good because I sat and watched this defense give QB's about 5 minutes to throw in the past 5 years as we scream at our TV's that we get no pressure, so that tells me its more than just coaching that makes him special and losing him would be a major hit to our defense which just happened to win us the superbowl.

Including this year until about week 15.

I want the Pats to keep Flowers, he has earned another contract. If they tag him, they still need to clear a few million via cuts/restructures to fit him in. Think the Pats will let him take a look at the market before offering him a deal?

not sure i like that though... Detroit is probably letting ansah go, and with Patricia knowing him, they would move right in... they have the cap space to pay him too... Same with Vrable in Tennessee, who have even more money that the Lions...

Tag him and hope that a long term deal can be reached seems like the best option at this point...

To be fair it is Rosenthal saying who he thinks will be tagged with Flowers being 1 spot ahead of not being tagged. Not exactly a lock to be tagged.

I agree that this report is sketchy, but I'm not sure how you determined that the Tag is for guys like Vernon and Watt but not Flowers.

Flowers is a far better player than Verson who is a sell-out pass rusher and Watt, as good as he can be at times, hasn't set the world on fire when his team needs him.

For us, Trey is a better value, because the guy plays his best football at the biggest moments on the biggest stages while a case could be made that Watt chokes in those same times.

I want Flowers here. He is absolutely the exception to the rule. He does and has done whatever has been asked of him since he arrived and we have nobody close to being ready to replace him.

He will be hard to replace. Everyone that thinks that the Pats defense is so great, just look at last year. It was more scheme than talent. The Pats defensive talent isn't very good at all...sans the secondary. Flowers is obviously the best in the front 7.
