Hey, bringing in Farrakhan as a calming influence is, well, hilarious

So we have a Jewish mayor working with Farrakahn. That's some progress.
Farrakahn, may be inflammatory in his rhetoric, but I would think using a black group to help quell the violence would help more than using just cops—especially white cops.

But Rahm is also doing the same thing to Chick-Fil-A what has been done to Jews and just over an opinion. So much for the tolerance of the left.

They're mainly located in the SE states. There's a lot around here. This one was practically up the street but I never bothered before.

Here’s a quick legal lesson. ABC News reported this week that two politicians had announced plans to “block” Chick-fil-A from opening restaurants in their districts after company president Dan Cathy said he was “guilty as charged” when it came to supporting “the biblical definition of the family unit.”

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno both made statements voicing opposition to Chick-fil-A bringing more tasty chicken sandwiches to their cities. Moreno was explicit: “Because of this man’s ignorance, I will now be denying Chick-fil-A’s permit to open a restaurant in the 1st Ward,” he wrote in an opinion piece sent to reporters, reports the Chicago Tribune. Mayer Menino was a little more circumspect: “There is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it,” he wrote in a letter to Chick-fil-A “urging [the company] to back out of [its] plans to locate in Boston.”

While Cathy’s same-sex marriage views may cause a mess of trouble for the billionaire-owned company on social media and through boycotts, it shouldn’t lead to permits actually being revoked or denied. Hello, First Amendment.

“If they’re complying with laws, but as an institution espousing political beliefs, there’s a constitutional problem with the government withholding benefits from them based on a political stance,” says Susan Bloch, a professor of constitutional law at Georgetown.

They could block Chick-fil-A if there were actually demonstrated grounds to believe it was violating anti-discrimination laws, such as refusing to hire or serve people based on their sexual orientation. (But even that would depend on the state; sexual orientation is not a protected class in some parts of the country.)

It seems that someone with some knowledge of the Constitution has since spoken with both of the officials. Each has “clarified” or “scaled back” their statements, with Mayor Menino saying he won’t try to stop Chick-fil-A from opening a new restaurant because there’s “little he can do to prevent it,” and Alderman Moreno telling CNN that his opposition would only stand if Chick-fil-A’s “beliefs transfer into a policy” and the chain starts actively discriminating.

Eat mor Constitution, guys. Had they actually blocked Chick-fil-A, the company could have sued the cities for discrimination, says Bloch, or simply ranted and raved about its constitutional rights being denied.

ACLU Backs Chick-fil-A Against Rahm Emanuel's Threatened Ban

Chicago and Boston might want to keep Chick-fil-A out of their cities but that doesn’t mean they have the right to do so, according to the ACLU.

Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy’s recent comments supporting the “biblical definition” of marriage as between a man and a woman has led to calls by gay rights advocates to boycott the chain. The mayors of Boston and Chicago have recently promised to stop further expansion of the restaurants in their cities. Emanuel weighed in after Chicago Alderman Proco Joe Moreno said he intends to block the chain from opening its second Chicago location because of Cathy’s remarks.

Legal experts said the cities’ push to stop Chick-fil-A doesn’t stand a chance because barring Chick-fil-A over the personal views of its owner is an “open and shut” discrimination case, Fox News reported.

“The government can regulate discrimination in employment or against customers, but what the government cannot do is to punish someone for their words,” Adam Schwartz, senior attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, told Fox News. “When an alderman refuses to allow a business to open because its owner has expressed a viewpoint the government disagrees with, the government is practicing viewpoint discrimination.”

The ACLU “strongly supports” same-sex marriage, Schwartz told Fox, but said that if a government can exclude a business for being against same-sex marriage, it can also exclude a business for being in support of same-sex marriage.

“But we also support the First Amendment,” he said. “We don’ think the government should exclude Chick-fil-A because of the anti-LGBT message. We believe this is clear cut.”

Jonathan Turley, a professor at the George Washington University Law School, told Fox News barring the restaurant raises “serious” constitutional concerns.

“It’s also a very slippery slope,” Turley told Fox News. “If a City Council started to punish companies because of the viewpoints of their chief operating officers, that would become a very long list of banned companies."
Constitutionality aside, here's a quick logic tip for Rahm: if Chick-Fil-A doesn't represent the values of Chicago, if it doesn't respect their "neighbors, residents, and family members," and the people of Chicago care about the values of fast food chicken companies, then the people of Chicago won't eat there.

Although I'm guessing the word isn't fully out yet, since the Mayor of San Francisco came out today threatening Chick-Fil-A

Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about the Chick-Fil-A message. It's a hate filled message and pisses me off.

However, I also recognize they have a right to state it just as I have a right to never eat there. We were at a layover in Philly this past Tuesday and had a choice of chicken or cardboard pizza. We consciously selected cardboard pizza. I can never give my money to a business which not only states that message, but also gives significant money to groups actively trying to convert that message into law.

They can put stores wherever they want, but I will also fully support any movement to boycott them. Free speech works both ways.

You're against my family, then I'm against you.

Bid, very well said! You are truly a tolerant person. I agree 100% on voting with the wallet as well.

If I felt strongly enough about a personal boycott I'd probably try to let the company know it too. Not that it would change their mind, but they should know why exactly they are losing customers and that one angry person generally tells more people about their anger than a happy one tells people about good experiences.
