Alex Smith Having Serious Complications

https://www.google.com/amp/s/247spor...125975410/Amp/

Report: Alex Smith is having complications from leg surgery
by Dan Schneier

Alex Smith may be forced to battle through a much longer road back to full health and playing quarterback in the NFL for the Washington Redskins than initially anticipated.

According to Washington Sports Radio host Eric Bickel, Smith has experienced some "devastating" and very serious complications from surgery on his broken tibia and fibula -- an injury he suffered during Washington's loss to the Houston Texans back in November. According to Bickel, Smith's career in the NFL might now be in jeopardy.

"Hearing from several different people over last few days that Alex Smith is having devastating complications from his broken leg surgery battling infection," Bickel Tweeted. "Supposedly he's had multiple surgeries to try to combat infection. Chances of him playing again in real jeaopardy."

Smith suffered the injury on a play where he was sacked by the Texans defense. Team physicians were great in this situation. They quickly got to Smith, diagnosed the injury, got the cast and cart out, and swiftly evacuated the Redskins quarterback from the field.

The sack came midway through the third quarter, causing Washington to lose 14 yards on the play. Smith immediately appeared to be in pain as his right ankle bent awkwardly when he was hit. Team physicians quickly put an air cast around his ankle before he was carted off.

As soon as Smith was taken from the field, the Redskins shut the tunnel down to give him privacy. No one could leave the field for a short amount of time as the medical staff continued to aid Smith before he was taken to a local hospital by ambulance.

Former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann took to Twitter shortly after Smith's injury and pointed out how similar it looked to his own.
"Alex's leg is exactly like mine 33 years ago," Theismann wrote. The former Super Bowl champion's career infamously ended in 1985 when he suffered a comminuted compound fracture after being sacked by Giants linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson.

What's truly eerie about this little fact is that there are more details that match up beyond the date. When Theismann went down with his injury, he was lined up at the 40-yard line. So was Smith. Also, the final score in both of these games was 23-21. That's just weird.

Back in 2008, Smith missed the entire season after a wire left from a previous shoulder injury resulted in him breaking a bone in the same shoulder.
After five seasons in Kansas City, Smith was traded to the Redskins back on January 30 in exchange for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round draft pick. Entering the game Smith had 2,045 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions across nine starts. The Redskins re-signed Smith to a long-term contract after trading for him this past offseason.

Aside from the weirdness factor with all of the parallels to Theismann, I feel pretty bad for what happened to Smith.

The guy was considered a major bust early on and acquired a reputation for sucking and he just kept working and became a decent QB and I have never heard him bitch or moan about his career once. He just lines up and does the best he can and wins his fair share by doing his conservative thing and not trying to be anyone else.

I hate him when we play him and celebrate his limitations then, but I can't not respect the guy. Not many high picks ever pull out of the nosedive the way he did. They just auger in and are never heard from again.

I sincerely hope he can come back from the injury. You can't hate everybody that doesn't wear the Flying Elvis.

Excellent post! Lots of Chiefs fans hated him but lots loved him. He had limitations which were very frustrating but he got us in the win column. He was a true team player for us and never complained one time about grooming his successor even when he knew what was coming.

I agree Hawg.

Always liked Smith. The flashy guys are awesome, but there’s something to be said for the guy that really stays within his skill set and manages a game and team fluidly.

Smith isn't an all timer, just a good solid NFL QB, above the Dalton Line but not far above.

Hope he can come back, but if not, he's had a pretty fine career.

I hope he gets better and can play with his kids, pain free, down the line.

If he ever makes it back to the NFL, it will be a miracle.

That's the important thing. He's made a fair amount of cash during his tenure and he's not a flashy idiot who pissed away his money (looking at you TO). Being able to live life walking upright after all is said and done is something that carries a fair amount of value as well. Good luck to you Alex

I am certainly rooting for him as well. Not a flashy guy, just a solid consistent guy who shows up and plays hard. Just an awful injury and I'm sure it's very painful and stressful for his family too.

All my best thoughts for Alex. I can't believe how stricken the QBs for the Redskins have been over the years and especially this year with broken legs.

Get well man and live your best life.
