#2 seed scenarios

Sowing the seeds

If the 12-2 Patriots win on Sunday in New York, they clinch a first-round bye and would be at least the second seed in the AFC playoffs.

If New England loses and the 11-3 San Diego Chargers win at 11-3 Indianapolis, San Diego and the Patriots would both be 12-3 overall but the edge would go to the Chargers because they would have a better record within the AFC (9-2 in the AFC to 9-3 for the Pats).

The Patriots' final game is against an NFC team (hapless San Francisco); San Diego's would be against the unpredictable Chiefs in San Diego. All San Diego would have to do then is beat Kansas City to finish the season 10-2 in the AFC and edge the Patriots for second seed.

As for Indianapolis, its last two games are against San Diego and at Denver. They are currently 7-3 in the AFC. Even if Indy wins its last two games to finish 13-3 and 9-3 in the AFC and the Patriots lose to the Jets and wind up 13-3 and 9-3 in the conference, the Pats would get the No. 2 seed because they beat the Colts head-to-head.

You might be joking I am not sure, but in case you are not, the answer is "If the 12-2 Patriots win on Sunday in New York, they clinch a first-round bye ."

thanks for the information undertaker, I actually kind of love this stuff.

so if the Chargers win out and the Patriots lose to the Jets, who would be the likely Patriots opponent in the first round of the playoffs?

In my youth, I could figure these things out, and would have all possible scenarios well understood.

it seems likely to me that the Colts and Jets will win this weekend, so what would that mean?

I believe in that scenario, the Pats would be the #3 seed, the highest ranking seed of the Wildcard games. As such, they would play the #6 seed, which is WAY up in the air right now....Jets, Ravens, Buffalo, etc...

TS, if the Steelers beat Baltimore, I believe they are assured #1 and HFA.

Ravens crushing the Steelers is a given, especially since Champ Bailey is representing Baltimore in the Pro Bowl (according to this thread:

http://www.patriotsplanet.com/BB/sho...&threadid=8547

).

[ heavily editted for clarity, maybe: ]

If the Patriots are the 3rd seed, ok, they play the 6th seed. It doesn't seem like it would be difficult for a young person with an agile brain to work out the possible scenarios with only two games left. There are only 4 possible teams, right? Denver, Jacksonville, Baltimore, Buffalo??

ok, looking at the schedules, it looks to me like realistically Jacksonville has the best chance of finishing 10-6.

I think it's likely that one of the 4 will finish 10-6.

I would guess that Buffalo has the second-best chance of finishing 10-6.

The Baltimore-Pittsburgh game is pretty big. Baltimore drops off the race if they lose.

I don't see the Broncoes beating both the TItans and the Colts, although it is possible (Colts game is in Denver).

I think most of us would love to see a Bills-Patriots playoff game, although needless to say, a bye would preferable.

edit (p.s.):

it seems to me that both Jacksonville and Buffalo could finish 10-6, but the Jaguars beat the Bills head-to-head.

I just think it's very likely that the Jags will be the 6th seed.

Here is a graphical representation. I believe for Buffalo to make it, they have to be the only team among those competing for the last spot to finish 10-6, as they lose the tie-breakers.
