Really? It looked more like an IR at the time.

Considering they don't play next week, does that mean he is almost certain to be ready for a possible AFCCG?

I did that when I slipped and fell on some snow-covered ice during a mid January training run. Luckily, I was only about a hundred yards from home so I was able to hobble back, though I felt about the way Nink looked coming off the field. For the rest of that day, as I alternated ice and heat, I though my participation in the Boston and other Spring races was in jeopardy, but after about 48 hours, I was able to walk okay, though still stiff and sore. A couple days after that, I set out on a two-mile test jog that ended up being four because the hip really loosened up. After another rest day, I ran a six-miler at pretty close to my regular workout pace (aided by a significant weather warmup). By the end of two weeks, it was almost as if it had never happened, though I could still feel it for a month or so afterward when I did crunches, especially obliques, and in certain stretching exercises.

So, if it's not too severe, recovery could happen pretty quickly, especially if one has a top-notch training staff and a state-of-the-art rehab/exercise facility at one's disposal. OTOH, what Nink has to do in a game is a lot more than merely running in a straight line at a steady pace.

The Patriots had a pretty successful day against the Dolphins on Sunday, shutting out the visitors from Florida 28-0 and getting tight end Rob Gronkowski some game action before the playoffs.

The only black mark on the day was a hip injury suffered by defensive end Rob Ninkovich in the second quarter. Ninkovich needed the help of trainers to leave the field and did not return to the game in the second half. In the hours after the game, there was some fear that the injury could impact his availability for the playoffs, but it seems like the Patriots have dodged that bullet.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports that tests show that Ninkovich avoided significant damage to his hip and there’s “a good chance” that he will be in the lineup when the Patriots return to the field a week from Sunday. Per Howe, Ninkovich strained muscles in his hip and should be able to practice with the team next week although he hasn’t been ruled out for this week.

Ninkovich led the Patriots with eight sacks this season and he also forced five fumbles in his first season as a full time defensive end. Losing that production would not be a good thing for the New England defense, which makes this report a reassuring one for the AFC’s second seed.

As he walked off the field with aid I did look to locate the injury. He was equally stiff in the hip, knee and ankle wh/ made it tough to tell. Both his anterior and posterior stride were shortened equally wh/ points to the hip or ankle more than the knee. I'm guessing a torn joint capsule or muscle (hip flexor) tear around the hip area.

It didn't look to me like he'll be back this year but Jarvis Greene played a year with a torn capsule. He wasn't the same, though, and had Sx during TC the next year w/out permission wh/ pissed off BB. Bye Jarvis.

Full disclosure: it's something I've been guilty of in the last couple of seasons. I think it's fair to say I've realised how wrong I was this year (not for the first time....).
