Joe Thuney Tagged

By Patriots. Stunning by itself but what does it mean for Brady if anything? Tag and trade?

---------- Post added at 11:29 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:24 AM ----------

Oops. I don't think I was supposed to make that public yet.
Oh well. Now I'm told the Pats want to sign him to an extension.

What does it mean? Bringing back DMac, JMac, Slater and Thuney for big money means very possibly life goes on...

In another thread I said we could get an idea of what BB's plan for Brady is by how he spends prior to, and immediately into, the start of the league year.

I don't know what our cap number will be with a Thuney extension added to the DMC extension, but it's becoming clear that BB isn't holding back any money for a high priced QB in 2020. Not just Brady but I doubt we have enough cap left to pay our rookies AND sign a top veteran QB like Bridgewater, given the money thrown at Tannehill.

Now, I wonder where BB thinks he can get a good QB for about a mil a year?

The possibility of a tag and trade for Thuney does exist, per source. Doesn’t appear to be set in stone. Fluid situation.

Do you think this could mean Brady's gone? Or a tag and trade for someone like Hopkins?

He can't be traded until he signs the franchise tag.

Might not have anything to do with Brady, the pats are not going into the season with a 14 mil cap hit on him no matter who the Qb is. Its either a trade or a contract which will lower the cap hit this year by a lot. As far as signing the tag, I imagine the pats had this all in place and knew that he would before they placed it. Would not seem like them to just do it for no reason without knowing some outcomes.

Cap Space=$5,413,286@patscap
(1/2) After accounting for Joe Thuney's tag I now have the Patriots salary cap space number as $5,413,286. 2020 League Cap = $198.2M. Number is w/ Top 51 rule so the salaries of bottom 9 players are not included. I have Tom Brady counting on my ledger as $13.5M.

(2/2) This number does NOT include the cap impact of Devin McCourty's re-signing. I am including the RFA tenders to Adam Butler and Jermaine Eluemunor. Number also accounts for Jason McCourty and Matthew Slater.

BB has a lot more up his sleeve apparently. I can't remember a time when the cap went down one year to the next.

The bad thing is even if Brady leaves, we still eat that 13 mil. If he stays could they spread that over two years to bring that number down along with his contract or is that just the starting point?

Very fluid right now, but pieces are starting to fall.

Not sure about a tag and trade for Thuney. Why would he prefer that to being a FA? He'd have to agree to a trade anyway (unless someone wants to get him for one year at the franchise number and lose a draft pick to boot.

My guess is the Pats want him and are working out an extension with him.

Ah, memories of Pablo Sandival and Hanley Ramirez. Luminary (my word for the day) Sox players with extended cap hits, even to this day, if memory serves.

Is a trade for jimmy G still on the table.........?

From the Pats
"Joe has been a model teammate and an essential element to our success ... Utilizing the franchise designation allows both sides more time to try to reach the goal of a long-term agreement."

Likely not a tag and trade deal.

Not a bad thing or a good thing. It's money we gave him a long time ago and are just now doing the accounting. The reason we have that dead money is because we brought it down in just that way. Even if we extend him, it will still be dead money eventually.

That's the downside of of spreading out cap charges. Eventually they come due. Don't even associate dead money with a specific player. It's just money we charged earlier and now the credit card is going to be paid.

If we extend Hightower or Edelman, it will bring our cap hit down but sooner or later the money will come due and the cap will feel the hit then.

No having 13 mil in dead money is a bad thing when your cap is as close as ours. It doesnt matter who we extend we are paying Brady to play on another team this year if he leaves.
