Leaking interest in Mallett this early makes this QB class look even weaker. It's one thing if one of us says that these QBs suck. It's quite different when GMs around the league are looking to avoid this QB class. I would trade him for any top 60 pick. I'd even trade him for a 2014 1st plus change.

Hoyer and Cassel were both nobodies who were first year #2 backups. There is plenty of precedent for NE being comfortable with that kind of move.

Flynn & smith will be his two biggest targets in FA. I won't be surprised if he tries to bring back kolb. Who had some success in his offense.

Cassell had Flutie behind him as a rookie and Testaverde behind him his 2nd year, so he wasn't their SOLE option. Hoyer ended up being pretty much the sole backup as an untested rookie in 2009 (though they tried, and failed, during the off-season to find a veteran 3rd option behind him) mainly because they suddenly HAD TO shed Cassell's Franchise Tag cap hit. I wouldn't assume that they were necessarily comfortable with the situation (though by 2010, they were, apparently). They kept (now experienced) Hoyer for Mallett's first season in 2011 and even hung the 2nd-round RFA tender on him in March 2012 in order to keep him at least through camp (until they were comfortable going with Mallett alone). My point is that the Pats are unlikely to be comfortable relying on an untested rookie as Brady's SOLE backup (especially, perhaps, one from THIS class). So, if the Pats took a draft pick for Mallet at this point, I think they'd likely feel it necessary to devote a roster spot to a 3rd QB, a veteran insurance policy. And I'm not seeing a vet QB out there right now who I'd personally trust even as much as the aging Flutie or Testaverde. And taking that roster spot from another unit may well be something they'd prefer not to do right now. So, while grabbing that hypothetical 3rd rounder for Mallett sounds great out of context, there are other costs/risks involved that need to be figured in. |
