One game - your soul is on the line

When ranking all time greats I often look to the "my eternal soul is on the line in one game, who do I want in this position" test. This is one way to get around the stats vs wins aspect. For the sake of a more interesting discussion we'll assume that the size and speed differences across eras is normalized. I tend to favor guys I've seen play, with a couple of exceptions. Also, assume full health and the player's prime/ best season.

So, here's my starters.

Coach - Bill Belichick (was there any doubt)

QB - Tom Brady (duh)
RB - Bo Jackson
FB - Jim Brown (a little position change here but I am sure he can handle it)
WR- Lynn Swann
WR - Calvin Johnson
TE - Gronk
T- Anthony Munoz
T- Jackie Slater
G-John Hannah
G-Gene Upshaw
C-Mike Webster

DT - Joe Green
DT - Randy White
DE - Reggie White
DE - Bruce Smith
OLB - Lawrence Taylor
OLB - Ted Hendricks
MLB - Dick Butkus
CB - Mike Haynes
CB - Dieon Sanders
S - Ed Reed
S Ronnie Lott

K - Adam Vinitieri
P - Ray Guy
PR - Devin Hester
KR - Gayle Sayers

I'm not mad at that roster at all.

My only question is Lynn Swann?

Receivers I'd start over Swann (in no particular order):

R Moss
M Harrison
R Wayne
C Carter
J Rice
M Irvin

Just off the top of my head. I'm not a Swann hater, he just isn't my number 2 choice.

Couldn't agree more.

And I loved the big play ability of Swann as a kid.

But over Moss?

Never.

The only thing that gave me hesitation over Moss was that his skill set is a little too similar to Calvin Johnson and a different type of receiver might compliment CJ better.

Not that having those two demons on the outside would be a bad thing. You'll have the opposing safeties having nightmares all week.

I like your list, but I'd take Sammie Baugh as the punter.

Then I'd have a backup QB on the roster, too.

Great list! What great memories. rep+1
I'm assuming talent > length of career, ie. Bo Jackson.
I have only a few very minor changes for my team. My changes are in red.

WR- Lynn Swann (Moss)
WR - Calvin Johnson
TE - Gronk (+ Tony Gonzalez in a 2 TE set)
T- Anthony Munoz
T- Jackie Slater (Eric Williams - Emmitt wouldn't be Emmitt w/o him)
G-John Hannah
G-Gene Upshaw (Randall McDaniel)
C-Mike Webster

DT - Joe Green (Alan Page - the only DT to win NFL MVP & 1 of 2 D players to win it)
DT - Randy White
DE - Reggie White
DE - Bruce Smith
OLB - Lawrence Taylor
OLB - Ted Hendricks (Kevin Greene or Jack Ham)
MLB - Dick Butkus (Jack Lambert)
CB - Mike Haynes (Rod Woodson but Haynes was teh awesome)
CB - Dieon Sanders
S - Ed Reed
S Ronnie Lott (Rodney Harrison)

K - Adam Vinitieri (Morten Andersen)
P - Ray Guy (Shane Lechler)
PR - Devin Hester
KR - Gayle Sayers

Great list but I would like to add Andre Tippett as the other OLB with Lawrence on the other side of course. Also I can't see how we can keep Barry Sanders off that list. I was a huge fan of Lynn Swann but I agree I think you have to go with Moss over him.

If my soul were on the line, I'm not sure I would want to count on Gronk to finish the game. I think I would trade a little bit of talent for some reliability.

The OP's premise was full health. I took that to mean throughout the game. If that's the case, there's no TE I would pick over Gronk.

I doubt I'd have Barry Sanders on my team even if we were filling out the full 53.

In addition to Bo and Brown I'd go with:

Earl Campbell
Christian Okoye
Jerome Bettis (noticing a trend...)
Emmitt Smith
Marcus Allen

Over Sanders. Sanders had way too many negative tuns for my taste. I also prefer power and/or workhouse backs. The idea of rotating out Bo Jackson and Earl Cambell makes me harder than Chinese algebra.

If you swapped teams for Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders, Bo would have a lot of negative runs on that Detroit "Run and Shoot" so called offense.

I'd take Barry Sanders over any running back, if you disregard teams, schemes, and offensive line talent.

+1 for mentioning the Nigerian Nightmare, though.

I'm not suggesting it was all his fault. I just don't think he learned when to give up on a run. It's part.of what made him great, but if soul is on the line I don't want my RB going backwards.

I want him goring tacklers like a rampaging bull ala Earl Campbell.
