The QB on higher levels reads the Middle of the Field (MOF) post-snap because of all the disguising that goes on. Two deep safeties can turn into one very quickly bringing on an extra rusher. His post snap read tells him if the MOF is open (MOFO) or Closed (MOFC) This also gives the QB and receivers their sight adjustments on many routes. |

But when I got '08 I started out on All-Pro and promptly ruined the perfect season by throwing 4 INTs and only 1 TD in the first game of the year against the Jets and lost 14-19. I was like O M G W T F B B Q and turned the difficulty down to Pro. I am killing teams now, but so did the real Pats to start the season, so I'm leaving it on Pro for now. lol. |

Are you pulling those diagrams right off of Madden?
The "Flat Defender Read" is a trips alignement vs. Cover 3. Number the three receivers from the sideline in #1, #2, & #3. #1 is running a Deep In route that he adjusts to the coverage. #2 is running some type of Comeback. #3 is running an Option Route. From how this diagram looks the QB reads R who is the Flat defender. If R works to get under the comeback, the QB throws to the In Route. If R drops under the In Route, hit the comeback on the sideline. EDIT: Is this what you're looking for? Last edited by AllWorldTE; 01-04-2008 at 12:08 PM.. |

Michigan Dave knows more about this than I, but many downfield passing plays (5/7 step drop type plays) have sight adjustments built in. An example of a MOF read would be a slot receiver (#2) running a seam route straight up the field. Pre-snap, the defense shows a two deep shell. The two Safeties are aligned just off the hash marks. The Slot reads this as MOFO (No S in the middle of the field). If the read holds true post snap, he will adjust his route and break to the MOF splitting the two half Safeties. If the defense rotates and one Safety come down and the other moves to the MOF, the slot may just stay on his seam or may break it off somewhere else depending on his programed reaction. |

The "Hard CB Roll" Coverage is Cover 3 "Cloud" where the CB and Safety exchange responsibilities. The CB now has the flat and the R now has the deep 1/3. They also exchanged run force responsibilities. Apparently the #2 changed his route based on a pre-snap "Hard Corner alignment." This route change gives #2 a chance to beat the R (rover/SS) deep. Cover 3 Covers are soft Corners, they play off and cover the deep zone. Hard corners play tight and cover the flat but becareful of those disguises though.

The "Overload Under Coverage" has R covering down on #2 and changed OLB's (S) drop to take away the comeback and the In Cut. The QB should look to the option route. In the first three examples, the MOF is closed so the option route breaks to the inside rather than continuing down the MOF. This is still Cover 3.
The "Overload Over" coverage they show here is not Cover 3. You can only see half the formation but this looks like a roll from a 2 shell. The FS rolls to take away (rob) the In Route while S doubles the Option Route with the Mike. The MOF read here is Open. If #1 sees this he breaks to the post over the FS's roll and the Option Route runs his route right down the MOF. This could have turned into a Cover 3 Zone if the unseen FS in the 2 Shell rolled back to the MOF post-snap. They do not show this though. |
