Hey youse guys-

It's just a little after 11pm here in Baghdad. No sign of Santa yet, but I'm going to hit the sack. Gonna be up early to open presents- er- well, maybe not.

But, I'm going on a mission down into Dora to attend a Christian worship service. Going to church...on Christmas Day...in Baghdad. Who'da thunk it?

These guys got it right. Who would've thought that one of THE most liberal papers in London would report on the positive developments here, but there it is.

Some of you might recognize the name of the U.S. Army officer they interview in the piece... ;)
To bad they couldn't find a reliable source instead of some hockey thug holding up a street corner!

Merry Christmas Kirk! :Patriots!

The worship services (I went to two different ones) were amazing- one was held in the burned out remains of a church hit with two car bombs in 2004, but more than 300 people attended and they are going to rebuild it.

If I could figure out how to post pictures on here, I'd put up a photo that I think really sums up what Christmas is. This truly is a picture worth a thousand words. Maybe some of the girlie pic veterans can help me out...

My cousin is in the Honor Guard and had to do a service Christmas morning. He said that that more than anything, helped him to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas.

You and all our soldiers are in my prayers.

No- I was all by myself. It's a ghost town around here on Saturday night/early Sunday morning...unless we have some kind of operation going on.

Here's a link to the photo I wanted to publish on Christmas.

http://northshorejournal.org/index.p...ll-ye-faithful

I still get choked up everytime I look at it. If you guys could have seen how horrible our area was, and that it took 88 American lives between March and now to get it under control (20 men alone KIA from BOR's nephew's unit, another 18 from the unit who owned the ground this church was in) you'd understand.

What we're seeing in South Baghdad is amazing. Christian kids getting presents from Santa during a service in a church that had been closed for months because of Al Qaeda...markets open, people on the streets without fear.

Amazing.

I can't say it enough. And, if you look into the face of this child on Christmas day- ask yourself: is this a sign of progress?

I most certainly think it is. And this is from someone who wasn't at all sure back during our "Dark Days" of April-June, when our FOB was mortared and rocketed frequently and it seemed like we lost someone every day; we were afraid to come to work because of the bad news we figured was coming.

Here's more on the remarkable transformation of Rashid from battleground to prospering neighborhood:

http://www.blackfive.net/main/2007/1...ve-b.html#more

Also from Blackfive.net:

"A True Gift of the Season:
Somewhere In Rashid, Iraq

The family could have been any family in the larger Rashid district. There was nothing to truly set them apart in appearance from any other family, nor is their home distinctive. What sets this family apart is not appearance, wealth, or such things, but rather a generosity of spirit.

While many families joke about cooking for an army, this family truly did so -- at least for a platoon. Continuing a tradition begun last Thanksgiving, this family invited a platoon they have gotten to know and respect for dinner. Knowing that these men were away from home and loved ones during special times of the year, this family decided that they would bring the holidays to them. So, they invited "their" platoon over for dinner, and were kind enough to let me come as well.

The greetings were warm and friendly, for they knew the soldiers well. It was an easy time, as jokes and tales flew the entire evening. The friendship and respect were easy to see on both sides, and I was reminded very much of old Southern hospitality.

The meal itself was a feast. The pictures tell the tale, and I will say that it was all good. Bodies were well fed, and spirits were as well. For amidst the easy camaraderie was something even more filling and satisfying than delicious food. It was the care, the friendship, and the respect between all there that fed the spirit in the same abundance did the food. It was the hope seen in a family inviting over as friends those that could just as easily be considered enemies.

There are indeed those who support the troops. They just are not necessarily Americans.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and share with you all this true gift of the season.

LW"

Thanks Kirk/UT - wonderful news. Shawn is rejoining his unit in Germany in a couple days, he's looked well and we are very thankful. His Papa leaves two days after he does to begin his unit's work-up for their deployment to Afghanistan - I don't expect to see him before next February. Stay safe Kirk, just the little bit you share here shows me what a great job you are doing yourself, and what wonderful men and women serve our country - keep it up, maybe some day the recognition our troops deserve will be theirs.

From the Lutheran Service Book: Lord God, bless Your Word wherever it is proclaimed. Make it a word of power and peace to convert those not yet Your own and to confirm those who have come to saving faith. May Your Word pass from the ear to the heart, from the heart to the lip, and from the lip to the life that, as You have promised, Your Word may achieve the purpose for which You send it; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen

Lord God of hosts, stretch forth Your almighty arm to strengthen and protect those who serve in the armed forces of our country. Support them in times of war, and in times of peace keep them from all evil, giving them courage and loyalty. Grant that in all things they may serve with integrity and with honor; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

Wow. I'm impressed.

It's so good to read about progress being made in Iraq. It makes a great change from the negative stuff in the headlines and makes me hopeful that when all of the foreign troops finally leave Iraq, they might leave it a better place than they found it. I never thought I'd be able to say that. This is one time I'd love to have to eat my words (having always said that I thought going into Iraq was a big mistake)
