Bernie: Let the Felons vote

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/st...us/3388679002/

Many things in our justice system need to be addressed. The big reason our prisons are full to the brim and overflowing no matter how fast we build new ones is the mandatory sentencing rules on federal and state drug offensies.

And the left was bound to do the math as to how our uncountable thousands of Black and other miniority prisoners might vote were they allowed. Funny this idea took so long.

Cheers

They are full because they are coddled. They are full because our justice system punishment is reduced to two outcomes, take their money or put them in prison. Labor camps would be a great option. Let the lawsuits begin.

I can just say this. I caught a felony when I was young and did some prison time but here in NH felons can vote. Heck you can even get an absentee ballot in prison. Considering the massive number of unjust and non objective laws in this country I have no issues with it.

If they are in Prison or jail (convicted), I don't know if I can say yes to voting. If they are not in prison or jail (not convicted), let them vote. I know Indiana allows it I believe but Kentucky doesn't. In jail and not convicted will require some thinking on how to allow them to vote (absentee via mail in, temporary voting center, etc).

The funny thing about felonies is that they aren't all created equal. In Indiana, a simple illegal possession of a controlled substance is a level 6 felony. So is theft, OWI (2nd offense), counterfeiting, false reporting, official misconduct or strangulation. I don't think this level of offenses should preclude a person from the vote.

And yeah, I get why the left is all fired up about this cause (votes) considering the fact that an inordinate percentage of people catching felonies are those who demographically fit the traditional Democrat voter. But big picture this is a blip on the radar when you consider that most people convicted of felony crimes are low level offenders caught up in a chemical dependency spiral/cycle and typically not overly concerned about getting to the polls. Of the remainder who are civically minded, how many will actually vote left? And of those, how many are voting in districts that aren't already skewed one way or another? I guess my point is that I don't see this moving the needle even on a .1 percent basis either way. So what are we worried about?

Plus arenít there districts in rural areas where the prison population would be the majority of voters? Canít see that being a problem or anything.

I thought of that myself, however I can't see that being allowed. I imagine they would allow the person to vote via absentee ballot from the district of their last known address/address of record.

I actually think democrats are wrong on this one. Trump has done more for the prison population than the dems. It is Trump that was championing prison reform in sentencing.

Maybe but seems to me that they won't cross the lines given the lifelong programming.
