The Lewinsky dress became part of the investigation due to it's being part of obstruction of justice and perjury in the course of the investigation.

It was relevant only because of that, not because of the sex that wasn't sex because it depends on what the meaning of "is" is.

I think this is a big point that hasn't been mentioned much. The public pressure on Congressional Republicans to do something will now ease quite a bit, since now someone is seen as being on the case.

Also, if what I heard was correct, the terms of Mueller's arrangement is that he has to provide a written report of his findings to the Rosenstein and the Justice Dept., but that report does not have to be made public.

So, something like the Star Report, which spewed out all the details for maximum political damage, and was the rationale for impeachment, may not happen. It could be that Comey's memos don't go public now if the rationale is that they are part of what is under investigation.

There's no reason to question that Mueller is an honest broker, and the long term effect may be very detrimental to Trump. But short term, it seems to stop the bleeding and possibly buy Trump some time. It's going to take a while for him to hire staff, set up an office, and get up to speed.

IMO, Mueller's investigation should have a component in its charter that requires full public disclosure independent of the Justice Dept. Also, Trump may now have more leeway in choosing an FBI director that won't be as aggressive in continuing to pursue Comey's case, since someone else is seen to have that task.

I strongly disagree with this.

This entire Russia narrative is about trying to regain the majorities in congress, purely political theater, and Mueller's appointment will have no impact on the left's campaign to regain power. None. Not even a shred.

In fact, I would go so far as to say it will exacerbate it. The pressure will be amped up even more...maybe about Russia, maybe not...but the left will just move on to the next avenue of attack.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with national security or truth.

I disagree about the reality of the Russian narrative - at a minimum there's connections with Paul Mannafort, Flynn & Roger Stone. If there was no there there, taking the hit for firing Comey, rather than letting him continue and uncover nothing doesn't make any sense.

But, my point was that Mueller's appointment takes the heat off the Republicans in Congress. If he hadn't been appointed, there would have been much more pressure for the Senate to proceed with Comey's public testimony, public testimony on the details behind his firing, and everything else. McCain, Sasse, Flake, Corker & others were ready to proceed. Action on other legislative items would have been practically frozen in the meantime.

Mueller has bought Trump time to deal with his tax plan, health care & other agenda items. If the Justice Dept. had continued to stonewall on a special investigator, things would have come to a boil much more quickly, and with PUBLIC hearings, which drive public opinion more than Mueller's private investigation will.

It hasn't bought the republicans any time. There will just be new pressure, new accusations and innuendo. It may take the media and the left a few days to come up with a new narrative to pursue, but that's all.

Maybe after Memorial Day. That would be the best time to launch a new offensive, PR wise.

Maybe they will go back and dig into Clintons e-mail scandal, Beghazi or the Clinton Foundation. He has endless investigative powers so that would be righteous if he looked into all of those too.

Might want to get his affairs in order first. Those sketchy single car accidents can be a doozy.

WASHINGTON — President Trump told Russian officials in the Oval Office this month that firing the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, had relieved “great pressure” on him, according to a document summarizing the meeting.

“I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job,” Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official. “I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”

Mr. Trump added, “I’m not under investigation.”

Saw this the other night. I couldn't get the video to work but hopefully it will work for you all.

And I mentioned this last week that there was no crime committed which would call for a special Counsel.

What former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn allegedly did is not legal.
(Which is probably why he asked for immunity and is now stating he will plead the 5th to the Senate inquiry).

And when warned by Obama that Flynn was dirty, Trump still brought him in to the administration. When warned again by Sally Yates that he was compromised, he still kept him in the position for 3 weeks, until that information was made public and only then did he can him.

I don't believe he was talking about Michael Flynn, he was talking about the Russian brouhaha but Trump is free to hire and fire whomever he wants.
