One of my first jobs was as a busboy at Bergson's Ice Cream at the South Shore Plaza.

It was there that I first started drinking chocolate ice cream sodas.

If you've never had one, you may want to find a place that still makes them and order one. You won't be sorry. Consume it slowly - the best part is when you get to the end, and the chocolate ice cream has melted completely into the soda water. Completely thirst-quenching, and yet when you're done you'll wish you had more.

Recipes are easy to find on the net.

Not entirely.

Club soda has minerals added as well, usually various sodium and/or potassium compounds (i.e. "salts")

it's trying to mimic a sparkling mineral water.

There's a bit from one of James Burke's "Connections" where he says they invented Quinine water as a way to get the quinine to prevent malaria.

It tasted so nasty that they added gin. And the rest is history.

Regarding leg cramps, yes quinine is very effective at reducing cramps.

I used to have a prescription for it for that very reason. I have a neurological condition, and get cramps in my leg a lot, mostly at night.

The quinine worked wonders at keeping that under control.

however 10 odd years ago, the FDA in their infinite wisdom, banned quinine for anything other than malaria.

Apparently people were taking it for such things as restless leg syndrome and there had been a few cases of people suffering heart attacks after taking quinine.

My Dr. knew I wasn't at risk for a heart attack, since I would have had one by then if I was.

To get the dosage I need I'd have to drink a crap load of Tonic water and not having a prescription for quinine poses a difficulty for me.

I'm subject to drug screening anytime I go to a nuclear plant, and they screen for quinine since it is common to cut cocaine with that.

So if I spike on quinine, and they don't confirm cocaine, they assume that I've been drinking a lot of gin and tonics and have a drinking problem.

I was questioned on this in the past and simply showed them my prescription to explain the quinine levels.

It works miracles for leg cramps. I mean it.

I suffered for years with crippling leg cramps. People don't understand what leg cramps are. I am talking the kind of cramps where the muscle contracts and goes up and down your calf like a wave. It is sheer agony and cripples you for days as the entire muscle becomes one big bruise in the process.

I was told all kinds of remedies...drink more fluids, potassium, many other things...all that info was garbage.

My grandfather turned me on to quinine about 18 years ago, and I've gone from getting leg cramps every 2 weeks or so, to zero in the last 18 years.

I swear on my grandfather's grave this is truth. It's a life saver.

I've had bad leg cramps. Nothing worse than middle of night caught in sheets and calf goes Incredible Hulk.

Many years ago I was doing super heavy lifting. Came home from gym and hopped in the shower getting ready to go out to eat with the wife unit. A quad cramp hit, and hit hard. THUMP! Writhing on the shower floor. Wife barges in thinking I'm having a heart attack or sumthin. Good 3-4 minutes of torture, which is an eternity when in the situation. Muscles just contracted as hard as possible but completely out of control. Pain thru the roof and then exhaustion.

The good girl grabbed takeout.

True love.

My wife occasionally gets cramps in her feet, mostly from wearing heals every day. When they happen, they're painful. She immediately goes for the tonic water and the cramps go away within minutes. Quinine is the real deal.

been there.

Once, several years ago when I was still very active in MA, I did a Saturday morning arm split before class (I was teaching this one). We were doing some onestep combinations. I got the double whammy of having both a quad AND a triceps lock up on me almost simultaneously. The joy was indescribable.

I get the 6 pack of tonic waters and keep them in the fridge. I personally enjoy the taste of quinine so it's no trouble just drinking one every couple of days.

I think it is probably most effective at prevention. She might be better off finding a way to drink some a couple of times a week. Mix it with cranberry juice and a lime, and it's a pretty good drink, with or without alcohol.

my go to drink most nights I am sitting in a bar and not drinking. Looks like a drink and no one humps your leg over why you are not drinking.

Scary. Love em. I always had mine with vanilla ice cream and the chocolate syrup. At the bottom, there are always these little ice (cream) crunch crystals in the soft and delicious semi bubbly ice cream residue to be sucked up with a vengeance come the finish.

They generally don't make them quite right these days, The soda should be added first slowly, flowing freely then finished compressed hard to create a foam around the floating scoop of ice cream. I try to teach the "jerks" when I can.

Had my first one in 1949 at Connor's pharmacy in gloucester.

Cheers
