yes it sucks

And one promise you made
one promise that always remains
No matter the price
A promise to survive
Persevere and thrive
And dare to rise once more
A promise to survive
Persevere and thrive
And fill the world with life
As we've always done

RIP. :(

Part of what makes these artists so special is the emotion the put into their material. I have to wonder, despite the financial gain and stardom, if singing these tunes they've placed so much of their sorrow and despair into isn't the equivalent of picking a mental/psychological scar over and over and over. Every time it's performed they're brought back to "that place" they invested themselves introspectively, and it's not often a happy place given the nature of most of this music.

The depression subsequently feeds the alcohol or drug or both habit and the course for ruin is set.

Pretty sad he just finished a show and then went too far.

He was in Detroit though...

Soundgarden closed a Detroit show with a cover of Led Zeppelin's ‘In My Time of Dying’
MAY 18, 2017 10:56 AM EDT

Chris Cornell has tragically passed away aged 52, the same day he performed his final ever show with Soundgarden. Notably, they closed the gig with ‘Slaves & Bulldozers’, merged with a refrain of Led Zeppelin’s ‘In My Time of Dying’ – a gospel song also covered by Bob Dylan.

The group have covered ‘In My Time of Dying’ several times in their career, but its inclusion takes on a new poignancy in the light of Cornell’s sudden death, the cause of which is not yet known.

BREAKING NEWS
CHRIS CORNELL
CAUSE OF DEATH RULED
SUICIDE BY HANGING
5/18/2017 10:50 AM PDT

179
Chris Cornell hanged himself ... this according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

The office released the cause of death Thursday as a "suicide by hanging" ... hours after Cornell's body was discovered in a Detroit hotel room following a concert. A full autopsy report, including toxicology results has not yet been completed.

We're told Chris' wife, Vicky, became concerned when she couldn't reach the Soundgarden frontman after his show, and police discovered his body on the bathroom floor.

Cornell was 52 years old.

This really sucks but as I have aged, I have kind of been numbed to things like this. Back in the day, this would have hit me as hard as Kurt Cobain's suicide. IMO, Chris Cornell is on the Mount Rushmore of grunge music. Badmotorfinger was the first CD that I ever bought. I really didn't know much about Soundgargen at the time but the first time I put that disc in my discman, I was blown away. I mean if Johnny Cash feels the need to cover something that's yours, you're kind of a big deal. RIP Chris.

Soundgarden started way before the grunge scene ever got big. They were on SST records.

Chris was one of the best lead singers ever. Amazing talent. Seems odd to that while out on tour...

Sad... :(

He was from Seattle, same as Curt Cobain, Andrew Wood, Layne Staley, I think that's what he was getting at.

Don't think it was Seattle per se as much as the big H that sped their demise.

I'm from the same town as Jeff Ament. know Layne Staley's best friend. He was the orator/speaker at his eulogy. He gave me a copy of it. I've met Jerry Cantrell through him..I knew what he meant.

I woke up about 4 this morning and that news headline was on my phone. Did a huge double take and put on my glasses and read it again.

That guy had one of the greatest voices I ever heard. What a drag and what possesses people to do themselves in like this, I will never understand. RIP

I've still got no words. Saw Soundgarden at Ritchie Coliseum at UMD spring of '92. Saw them on Lolapalooza the next year. Saw them 4 years ago with O.Z.O. Jr at Constitution Hall in DC January of 2013. Saw Audioslave at the 9:30 club in '02. Saw Cornell solo at Rams Head in Baltimore in '06. For me and my boys in the 90's, this was our guy. Absolutely THE guy in the 90's. O.Z.O. Jr. was a huge Soundgarden fan from pretty much the time he knew what music was. It wasn't really her thing, but even Mrs. O.Z.O. had an appreciation for Cornell's amazing talent.

This is without question the most profound loss I have felt along the lines of losing an artist. I imagine this is how I'm going to feel when Jimmy Page and Mick Jagger die.
