Only thing missing is Marino, but he was busy playing out the string at Pitt, at the time.

The '85 Dolphins are the only team to beat the '85 Bears in the regular season. That is still the most proud accomplishment by Dan Marino in his career. Both teams desperately wanted a rematch.

Those Dolphins also beat the Pats twice that year. Well, the Pats earned the 5th and final seed (only Wildcard slot back then) to make the playoffs. The Pats knocked off the 4 seed Jets then the 1st seed Raiders in improbable wins. Now the Pats had to face the Dolphins in the Orange Bowl, a place the Pats had lost 18 consecutive games. The Dolphins were 14+ point favorites. Raymond Berry had Tony Eason at QB. Shula was confident going against his former WR; Marino was at his best. Win and they're in the SB against the Bears, a team they'd beaten earlier that season. This may be Shula's worst loss.

What a great run that was, at the time, the only team to win 3 road games to reach the Super Bowl.

Small point of order.....Back then, there were 2 wild cards and 3 division winners in each conference. The 3 division winners got byes and the 2 wild card teams played to reach the divisional round.

How about don't turn the ball over 6 times at home, Miami?

That Patriot D was incredible during that playoff run. If I recall, they had at least 1 (maybe 2) TD's against the Raiders in the divisional game.

Then of course the Bears happened.

I just watched the Raiders game yesterday. They had a TD on Special Teams (Fulton Walker fumbled TWICE in that game, how was he still in there?), but the Raiders also had 6 turnovers at home, including 3 picks (Lippett x2, Marion).

Back 7 was fantastic in the playoffs overall, the line was, not great, Marcus Allen was destroying them on the ground, yet after HIS fumble, he never saw the ball again (he should have had 50 carries in that game). Instead they decided to have Marc 'Lamar Jackson Accuracy' Wilson keep chucking it up to covered guys who couldn't get open.

The 2 4th quarter timeouts by Wilson to avoid Delay of Game penalties was pretty classic.

Raiders/Dolphins would have been a sick AFCCG. Unfortunately for them, the Patriots actually hung onto the football for the most part, and that's all they had to do to win.

Observations from the Raiders game -

Tony Eason was mobile as fuck, and SUPER-accurate for the time. Hit Lin Dawson in the back of the endzone at the apex of his jump, while on the run. However, you could tell he already was turtling from hits. (Marc Wilson was too).

I think Berry would have run Craig James 65 times if he could have.

Patriots two turnovers in the game - Muffed Punt by Irving Fryar, and a fumble by Mosi (I know, right?)

Andre Tippett was a fucking beast. So was Hawg Hannah. Although the lines on both sides were pretty small comparatively.

A spread offense would have destroyed any defense in that age, even the 46. Marino beat the Bears with quick-release deep shots, but bubble screens would have worked just as well.

And post game, Pat Sullivan went after Matt Millen and Howie Long and got a
nice right hook to the head for it. During locker room interviews, the Raiders said that Miami needed to thank them because they just got a free ride to the Super Bowl.

Classic stuff....
