Here's what Wiki has to say about wait times in the US vs. Canada eh.

Quote:
As reported by the Health Council of Canada, a 2010 Commonwealth survey found that 39% of Canadians waited 2 hours or more in the emergency room, versus 31% in the U.S.; 43% waited 4 weeks or more to see a specialist, versus 10% in the U.S. The same survey states that 37% of Canadians say it is difficult to access care after hours (evenings, weekends or holidays) without going to the emergency department compared to over 34% of Americans.

...

A 2018 survey conducted by the Fraser Institute found that wait times in Canada for a variety of medical procedures reached "an all-time high." In Canada, unlike in the United States, appointment duration (meeting with physicians) averaged under two (2) minutes. These very fast appointments are a result of physicians attempting to accommodate for the number of patients using the medical system. In these appointments, however, diagnoses or prescriptions were rarely given, where the patients instead were almost always referred to specialists to receive treatment for their medical issues. Patients in Canada waited an average of 19.8 weeks to receive treatment, regardless of whether they were able to see a specialist or not. This is juxtaposed with the average wait times in the United States. In the U.S. the average wait time for a first-time appointment is 24 days (≈3 times faster than in Canada); wait times for Emergency Room (ER) services averaged 24 minutes (more than 4x faster than in Canada); wait times for specialists averaged between 3–6.4 weeks (over 6x faster than in Canada)

In the U.S., patients on Medicaid, the low-income government programs, can wait up to a maximum of 12 weeks to see specialists (12 weeks less than the average wait time in Canada).

...

A 2003 survey of hospital administrators conducted in Canada, the U.S., and three other countries found dissatisfaction with both the U.S. and Canadian systems. For example, 21% of Canadian hospital administrators, but less than 1% of American administrators, said that it would take over three weeks to do a biopsy for possible breast cancer on a 50-year-old woman; 50% of Canadian administrators versus none of their American counterparts said that it would take over six months for a 65-year-old to undergo a routine hip replacement surgery.
Quick, quality, low cost: pick any two.

Quote:
In a letter to the Wall Street Journal, Robert Bell, the President and CEO of University Health Network, Toronto, said that Michael Moore's film Sicko "exaggerated the performance of the Canadian health system — there is no doubt that too many patients still stay in our emergency departments waiting for admission to scarce hospital beds." However, "Canadians spend about 55% of what Americans spend on health care and have longer life expectancy and lower infant mortality rates. Many Americans have access to quality healthcare. All Canadians have access to similar care at a considerably lower cost." There is "no question" that the lower cost has come at the cost of "restriction of supply with sub-optimal access to services," said Bell
No excrement Sherlock.

The only way to reduce cost is to reduce services and/or restrict access.

This isn't rocket surgery.

If someone thinks the private market makes their processes more expensive then they have to doesn't understand capitalism.

If an Insurance company can cut the overhead costs of providing their service, that's a no brainer to implement, since it goes straight to the bottom line.

If they have any paperwork/bureaucracy in place then it is due to one of two reasons.

It is mandated by the government regulations, and I'll wager to bet, that's a substantial part of it.

Or they have determined that it helps them minimize payments they are not obligated to pay under the contract in place.

But let's cut to the chase.

If the issue is that the US spends too much money on health care, for what we're getting, how is that the insurance companies fault?

They are separate corporations who have the fiduciary responsibility to their stakeholders to maximize the profits of their company.

They are the ones who payout all the money to the health care providers, and couldn't care less if those other groups didn't make so much money.

So if the money spent on health care is the issue, why isn't the focus on the providers?

If the issue is that not everyone has health insurance, then why do we need to eliminate health insurance provided by companies?

Shouldn't the answer be to get those not covered by insurance companies covered under Medicare or some other government program?

Isn't that what Obamacare was supposed to do?

Oh, and one final bit.

At present, health insurance companies are not allowed to sell policies across State lines. They must have a "presence" in each State.

The justification for this is that each State has it's own regulations regarding what an insurance policy must consist of.

This of course adds cost to the insurance companies, since they have to not only have a presence in each State, but be able to handle the different requirements.

When asked why such a policy exists, the usual suspects say that should this policy be changed it will be a "race to the bottom" as each insurance company finds the State with the most "friendly" rules and set up shop there.

This is seen as an infringement on States rights, yeah ignore the irony that the left of center use that phrase, and so the rules stay in place.

So, how does a Federal program avoid this conundrum?

OK trick question. From the Dems perspective, it won't be a "race to the bottom", it will be a "race to the top".

Yeah, that is sure to reduce costs.

Al I know is that I have a friend in Canada has been waiting in line for over a year for gallbladder surgery in agony.

This is not OK.

And I actually I know a lot more than that but let's start there.

Universal Healthcare is an abomination morally, fiscally and in end results.

Was in CA for hockey and sprained a thumb playing football. ER was ridiculous. And that was decades ago.

I also know someone who has had the gallbladder surgery put off for what seems like forever in Canada. I was surprised she has had to wait so long. I also have a friend in Scotland who experienced a nearly 5 month wait for a umbilical hernia procedure (of course it was a longer wait partially due to Covid) but combined with the time off afterwards he will have missed close to 6 months of work for the Royal Mail by the time he returns to his carrier duties.

That’s why a lot of Canadians come to the US when they have an urgent health care need.
