In what universe does Philip Rivers belong in the hall of fame?

I've been seeing that all over media. Are they trying to will that into existence? There is a huge backlog of worthy candidates, and Rivers is not one.

For comparison, take Frank Gore. He's in the top 5 all time in yards, top 3 in games played, and he smokes his contemporaries in the modern era of rbbc. In the area of "fame", there is zero chance any of you don't know who he is. He is considered a borderline case at best, and rightly so, under the argument that just compiling stats shouldn't be good enough.

Philip Rivers isn't even in the same league as Frank Gore. He's not even in the top five among his contemporaries for virtually any key statistical category. He has no playoff success to speak of. In a world where Ty Law still hasn't gotten in and Frank Gore is a borderline candidate, Philip Rivers shouldn't even be close to consideration.

What am I missing, other than some people want basically every QB who plays for 15 years to be in there, actual merit or other positions be darned?

The HOF has been reduced to a popularity contest with the voters. There's been a lot of "pretty good" being inducted especially those who have moved on to media after their careers.

I tend to agree with this. Rivers just isn't there yet..... Even the people that say he is the next Dan Marino because he may not win a Super Bowl I don't agree with. I think Dan Marino is one of the greatest QB's in NFL history to not win a Super Bowl. Not sure Rivers could be in that same equation. He is one hell of a good qb don't get me wrong, but to say HOF I think is a stretch..... Then again I would take Rivers on my team over Aaron Rodgers any day of the week and 90% of this world say Rodgers is going to the HOF so what the hell do I know.

F&M have been beating this drum all week.

“Like it or not he’s a first ballot HoFer”. Why?

They list him with Rodgers, Brees, Ben, Eli, as just below Brady and Manning. Why?

He hasn’t won dick.

118-90 career record. A compilation of passing and yardage stats because they played behind so often. Had true 1st ballot HoF talent at RB and TE but couldn’t get shit done.

He’s in the hopg- hall of pretty good, lower case on purpose.

There is no way Rivers and Marino are in the same conversation. Granted, Rivers is probably one of the toughest guys to ever play the position...but it really ends there. Granted, Marino never won anything either, but at the time he retired he held every significant career passing record. Rivers has decent career numbers, but he's never won anything and that counts against him. He has significantly better numbers than Warner, but Warner is a 2X All-Pro, won 3 conferences championships and a Super Bowl.

Rivers isn’t even top 5 in his generation and 3rd best in his draft class. HOF is laughable.

Not bad.

And I’ve seen Rivers with similar look before as well.

Just pumped them into pro football reference comp tool.

Rivers is better.

But that doesn’t justify either. Different eras.

I mean, take a look at Lynn Swanns stats (and I loved him as a kid).

If that were the bar there’d be about 300 more WRs to be added.

Yeah its tough to just go by stats. I heard some radio head comparing Dak Prescotts first 3 year stats with different QB's through the years, and I'm like, just stop you idiots. Stats especially early on are just so differnt than it used to be, as early as 10 years ago.

Caller stoned F&M in their collective tracks the other day. They’re on their HoF rant, saying he’s a lock.

Caller: “What is Rivers signature game or even moment?”

And going with that.... What has Rivers done in the playoffs? I think he has won a total of 4 games in his playoff career since 06 or whenever he started for the Chargers. Luck has that many wins in 7 seasons and he sat out last year so more like 6 seasons. Rivers is a very good regular season QB but outside of that I haven't seen him do much. Maybe if he makes it to the Super Bowl this season I will change my view a bit. But until then I still think he is overrated.

The only game that I can remember is when he tore his acl vs the Pats in the playoffs...and kept playing.
