Honestly, you have to give him a ton of credit (well, I do anyway) for not micromanaging, and letting Patricia run the defense the way he wanted.

Not to mention, GTFB had won him Super Bowls in the past. Hoping the mistakes could be corrected.

I will say (from appearances):

2019 Collins > 2014 Collins
2019 Hightower > 2014 Hightower
2019 D. McCourty > 2014 D. McCourty
2019 D. Harmon > 2014 D. Harmon

Jury is still out on Chung, he hasn't been on the field enough to determine.

Chandler Jones had 6 sacks in 2014, and 1 in the playoffs. Winovich already has 4 by himself, and he doesn't even start.

This is before we even get to 2019 Van Noy >>>>>>>>>>> 2014 Ninkovich, Gilmore being worlds better than the corpse of Darrelle Revis, Jonathan Jones being better than any corner on the 2014 roster...

But to me, and this will get lost to history, the thing which is making this 2019 defense go, is the play of Danny Shelton and Adam Butler. Two guys where the light just came on, and they both. just. get it. And nobody saw it coming. Because they're playing at a pro bowl level, Michael Bennett can't even get on the field for more than spot duty.

Assuming health, this is the best defense in the history of the franchise, bar none. You can say 2003, but the numbers and the era it's being played in, at least to this point, it's not even close, 2019 is far superior.

Good post, Tommy. Adding in LDE L. Guy, RDE John Simon, CB JC Jackson, CB Jason McCourty and S Duron Harmon gives the Pats a ton of versatile talent. This D could set some records.

John Simon's another one. What a scrap heap acquisition from Belichick. He suddenly 'gets it' now too.

Given the lack of quality offenses that the Pats are facing this year, is the defensive scoring record possible? The fewest points against in a 16 game season is 165 by Baltimore in 2000. That was a 10.3/G avg. The Pats are currently at 6.8 with the Giants, Jet coming up and games still to be played against the likes of Buffalo, Miami and Cincinnati.

If this defense stays healthy, it can be historic.

BTW, the all-time pts/G record is 9.2 by Atlanta in '77. Never would have guessed that.

20th in points, 27th in yards, 30th against the pass, 8 turnovers forced (3 from the Mighty Chefs).
Excellent.

I can't believe this defense is giving up an average of 1 net point a game so far.

QB rating against was 44 going into Thursday and it got better. (now 42.6)
The league average is 92.2

ANY/A against the Pats is 1.5 league average is 6.3
