Mayock's 2013 Pre-Combine Position Rankings

Mayock always seems to have the best take on the draft.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/0ap10...2013-nfl-draft

Some positions of interest to me.
Quote:
Wide Receiver

1. Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee
2. Keenan Allen, Cal
3. Terrance Williams, Baylor
4. Tavon Austin, West Virginia
5. Quinton Patton, Louisiana Tech

Cornerback

1. Dee Milliner, Alabama
2. Xavier Rhodes, Florida State
3. Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State
4. Desmond Trufant, Washington
5. Jordan Poyer, Oregon State
Safety

1. Kenny Vaccaro, Texas
2. Matt Elam, Florida
3. Johnathan Cyprien, Florida International
4. Eric Reid, LSU
5. Zeke Motta, Notre Dame
Defensive Tackle

1. Sharrif Floyd, Florida
2. Star Lotulelei, Utah
3. Sheldon Richardson, Missouri
4. Sylvester Williams, North Carolina
T-5. Kawann Short, Purdue
T-5. Johnathan Hankins, Ohio State
Patterson has been moving up quickly. Floyd over Lotulelei is a surprise but not completely unexpected. G Chance Warmack has been cited by many as the best player in the draft but since G isn't a highly valued position, he won't go as highly as his talent level. He'll be a 10 yr All Pro caliber G for some lucky team.

I find Dion Jordan fascinating as a prospect.

He might be one of the few guys with the size and athleticism to be able to cover this new breed of tight ends like Gronkowski and the like.

I look forward to us drafting one of these guys instead of a DB, a WR or a pass rusher.

Tight End
1. Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame
2. Zach Ertz, Stanford
3. Gavin Escobar, San Diego State
4. Travis Kelce, Cincinnati
5. Jordan Reed, Florida

YES! I beat Middy to it!

Draft czar Mike Mayock does not see a real different between picks No. 5 and 25 in terms of projected available talent.

"I don't really see the immediate difference-makers in the top 10," Mayock said. "If you're a playoff team this year, you have to be laughing." Because of the plateau of talent, there's a chance positions that usually are selected later in the first-round, namely guard, could see a push earlier in the draft.

Mike Loyko@NEPD_Loyko As Mayock said there isn't much difference between #5-30, but there also isn't much difference between #32 - 75.
This could make it difficult for BB to trade back with 29.

Evan Silva comments on Mayock's picks

Quote:
Wide Receivers
1. Cordarrelle Patterson*, Tennessee
2. Keenan Allen*, California
3. Terrance Williams, Baylor
4. Tavon Austin, West Virginia
5. Quinton Patton, Louisiana Tech

Notes: The receiver class is exceptionally deep. So good players are inevitably going to be left out when Mayock only ranks five guys at each position. Clemson's DeAndre Hopkins was the most notable snub and is a legitimate first-round possibility. Tennessee Tech's Da'Rick Rogers oozes talent but has off-field concerns. Justin Hunter (Tennessee), Stedman Bailey (West Virginia), Markus Wheaton (Oregon State), and Robert Woods (USC) also didn't make Mayock's cut. It's worth noting that Mayock said his "jaw dropped" when recently watching Patterson's game tape. Allen is a possession/run-after-catch threat ala Miles Austin. Williams is a vertical flier. Austin is a human joystick in the slot. Patton has generated comparisons to Reggie Wayne.

Defensive Tackles
1. Sharrif Floyd*, Florida
2. Star Lotulelei, Utah
3. Sheldon Richardson*, Missouri
4. Sylvester Williams, North Carolina
5 (tie). Johnathan Hankins*, Ohio State
Kawann Short, Purdue

Notes: Multiple Pro Bowlers will emerge from this year's defensive tackle group. Floyd, Lotulelei, and Richardson are all expected to be top-ten picks. Mayock turned a few heads by placing Lotulelei second at the position, but Florida's Floyd will rise in Indy. Richardson is a classic "three-technique" pass rusher. Mayock's D-Tackle snubs include Jesse Williams from Alabama, Missouri Southern's Brandon Williams, Georgia's Big John Jenkins, and Bennie Logan of LSU.

Cornerbacks
1. Dee Milliner*, Alabama
2. Xavier Rhodes*, Florida State
3. Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State
4. Desmond Trufant, Washington
5. Jordan Poyer, Oregon State

Notes: Some notable names didn't make the cut here: David Amerson (NC State), Tyrann Mathieu (LSU), Logan Ryan (Rutgers), Jamar Taylor (Boise State), and Tharold Simon (LSU). Milliner is considered a possibility for the draft's top-five selections because so many teams need cornerback help at the top. Rhodes, Banks, and Trufant are also all on the first-round radar. Poyer might not test the best, but he makes plays. Be sure to catch the final day of Combine testing on NFL Network. It's next Tuesday, and Deion Sanders joins the set as the defensive backs run and perform on-field drills. Love him or hate him, Deion is an informative and compelling color analyst.

Safeties
1. Kenny Vaccaro, Texas
2. Matt Elam*, Florida
3. Johnathan Cyprien, Florida International
4. Eric Reid*, LSU
5. Zeke Motta, Notre Dame

Notes: Look out for fast-riser Cyprien, who blew up the Senior Bowl and is beginning to show up in the first round of some mocks. Vaccaro is this year's consensus top safety. Elam is a big hitter with question marks about the rest of his game. Reid seemed to take a step back as a junior after flashing special tools as a sophomore. Mayock is familiar with all of the Notre Dame players because he calls Irish games for NBC. Expect Motta to eventually slide out of the top five, and potentially be replaced by South Carolina's D.J. Swearinger or Oklahoma's Tony Jefferson.

More from Mayock about this draft brought by Reiss

Quote:
NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock held a conference call on Monday, and here is what we learned about the 2013 draft – putting our own Patriots twist on things -- from Mayock’s perspective:

1. Best overall depth in 10 years. In his opening remarks, Mayock provided the following snapshot of the 2013 draft: Possibly the best overall depth he’s seen in 10 years, not the standard difference-makers in the top 10, and a lot of holes in the quarterbacks. Later, Mayock added that he doesn’t see much of a difference between picks 5 and 25. The Patriots have just five selections in the draft, and perhaps the depth of the draft leads Bill Belichick to seek trade-downs to bolster his draft-day ammunition.

2. One of the best safety classes in years. Mayock views this safety class as one of the best he’s seen. This echoes the thoughts of ESPN’s Todd McShay from last week, who called this a “very deep group of safeties.” One thing to keep in mind on this type of information is that if a team like the Patriots views it the same way, it could affect the level of aggressiveness of potential pursuit of free agents like Ed Reed and/or Charles Woodson. Understanding the areas of strength of the draft, and marrying it to free agency, is an annual exercise in front offices around the NFL.

3. If you like Anquan BoldinKeenan Allen could be your WR. California receiver Keenan Allen (6-3, 210) drew raves from Mayock, who made the point that if teams are comfortable with Allen’s speed, he could be viewed as an Anquan Boldin-type. But if teams get hung up on speed questions with Allen, that could lead him to slide a bit. Mayock seems to think Allen is a nice fit in the 20-30 range of the first round, citing his size, toughness and ability to get off press coverage, among other things. The Patriots pick at No. 29 and if they inject some size and youth at receiver, Allen could be a player on their radar if he slides (which could happen if he doesn’t run sub-4.5 in the 40 at the combine).

4. Just one cornerback with first-round grade at this time. When Mayock shared some of his prospects with first-round grades, he highlighted six offensive tackles, six defensive tackles, two receivers and one cornerback. The light cornerback class after Alabama’s Dee Milliner was notable from this perspective because it could be an area of interest for the Patriots. Mayock said Mississippi State’s Johnthan Banks could work his way into the first round by running well at the combine. One other point from Mayock that adds good context for this time of year: cornerbacks and receivers are “true speed positions” and the combine is where teams look for the an accurate gauge of their speed.

5. Chance Warmack – best player on tape. Mayock said that Alabama guard Chance Warmack is the best player he’s seen on tape this year. He put Warmack, Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel, Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher and North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper as the four players who the Chiefs would be deciding between with the No. 1 overall pick.

Lot's of depth means more teams get better. Not a good thing. I like weaker drafts where the teams who do their homework come out on top.
