NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (3-2) vs. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (5-0)
Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018 at 8:20 p.m. ET. Gillette Stadium (65,878)
PATRIOTS: Game Release (PDF) | Roster | Depth Chart | Stats | Watch Games
CHIEFS: Roster | Depth Chart | Stats | Standings
The New England Patriots will host the Kansas City Chiefs in a Sunday Night Football game. It is the second straight primetime game for the Patriots in a stretch of four primetime games in five weeks. The Patriots beat Indianapolis on Thursday Night Football last week. After a trip to Chicago next week, the Patriots travel to Buffalo for Monday Night Football followed by a Sunday Night game vs. Green Bay at Gillette Stadium.
This week's game will be the 13th time in team history that the Patriots will be playing in back-to-back primetime games. The 2018 season is the first time that the Patriots have two sets of back-to-back primetime games in the same season. Pittsburgh and San Francisco also have two sets of consecutive primetime contests in 2018. The last time the Patriots played back-to-back primetime games was in 2015.
Since 2000, only three other teams have played at least 13 consecutive primetime games - Chicago (14) , Dallas (13) and Pittsburgh (13).

PILING UP THE WINS

Tom Brady has the most regular-season wins by a quarterback in NFL history and with one more victory, he will become the fourth to reach 200 regular-season wins. Brady also enters this week tied with Adam Vinatieri for most career wins in the regular season and playoffs combined with 226.

PASSING PERFORMANCES

Tom Brady is slated to start against Kansas City for the eighth time in the regular season and the ninth time overall. He is 4-3 all-time against the Chiefs in the regular season, including 3-1 at home.

WICKED GOOD IN OCTOBER

The Patriots are an NFL-best 58-18 (.763) in the month of October since the 2000 season. The Patriots are 33-6 (.846) at home during that time and 25-12 on the road.

Patriots ranked in PFF's top ten in grade at their position through five weeks:

TE: Gronk (fifth)

C: David Andrews (fourth)

CB: Jason McCourty (seventh)
CB: Stephon Gilmore (ninth)

LB: Ja'Whaun Bentley (sixth)

DL: Lawrence Guy (fifth)
EDGE: Trey Flowers (fourth)
K Gostowski 4th

Brady is ranked 11th.
Shaq Mason 11th
Offensive Line 9th
Starting Lineup:
Left Tackle: Trent Brown, 61.0
Left Guard: Joe Thuney, 70.0
Center: David Andrews, 71.8
Right Guard: Shaq Mason, 72.8
Right Tackle: Marcus Cannon, 61.7

The interior of the Patriots’ offensive line have all been in the midst of solid 2018 outings, but right guard Shaq Mason narrowly takes the cake here. Most encouraging has been his work in pass protection, which has been his weaker area over the course of his career. With only four pressures allowed so far, Mason is on pace to allow over 10 fewer than he did in 2017.

KC's top ten players:
QB Mahomes 4th
TE Kelce 2nd
Edge Dee Ford 8th

Dee Ford has been their best at pressuring opposing QBs. He's a smallish but fast LB/DE who uses his quickness to get to the QB. The Pats have to stop him somehow and I don't think Cannon is the answer. Running right at him may be the best way to control him.

Offensive Line 16th
Starting Lineup:
Left Tackle: Eric Fisher, 63.9
Left Guard: Cam Erving, 55.9
Center: Mitch Morse, 62.7
Right Guard: Jordan Devey, 76.9
Right Tackle: Mitchell Schwartz, 76.2

Playing tackle in the AFC West has gotten a whole lot easier in 2018 with Khalil Mack traded away, Joey Bosa out with injury and Von Miller banged up. Mitchell Schwartz is taking advantage and is in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career. He’s allowed only two hits and four hurries through the first five games in the Chiefs’ high-powered offense.

LG Cam Erving is actually the worst OLman for the Chiefs.

PFF grades for both teams
Overall
Pats - 84.4 3rd

KC - 81.7 6th

Offense

Pats - 73.9 11th

KC - 83.2 2nd

Defense

Pats - 83.2 2nd
KC - 64.5 26th

STs
Pats - 8th
KC - 30th

Defense and STs are soft spots for the Chiefs.

Kelce has been Mahomes main guy this year especially on broken plays. Without Kelce as his go to guy, Mahomes would be more average. Stopping Kelce from running amok should fall to Patrick Chung most of the time. We don't have a LB who can cover Kelce. I can see BB using Van Noy or Hightower to chip Kelce at the LOS.

Containing Mahomes in the pocket is also key since his QBR is 25 points or so higher when on the run whether by design or play breakdown.

KC has too many weapons to contain so they'll move the ball and score plenty of points. Fortunately, we should, too. The Jaguars' 5 turnovers had a lot to do with KC's big win.

PFF thinks the Pats should win by >4.5 points and the total scoring by both teams should be 69 points (the vegas pt spread is 3.5 and the O/U is 59) so PFF recommends betting the Pats -3.5 and the over.

PFF has it

Pats 37
KC 32.

Chiefs lead the Pats in every offensive category

Pats lead the Chiefs in defensive statistics.

One thing to be noted is the Chiefs defense leads the league in 3rd down conversion.

This is going to be a fun game to witness

Thinking that containing Mahomes in the pocket is funny, to do that you'll have to bring outside containment which means he'll be picking your defense apart. You'd be best off to rush 1 and put 10 in coverage.

Take it up with PFF, who has them ranked 30th. That wasn't an opinion posted there, just a re-post from PFF.

Well, PFF's not always the most accurate source, as we well know. Personally I think they're underrating Brock Osweiler's potential for greatness in a big spot, here.

I totally agree. Robert Griffin III is no one to be trifled with.

I expect part of the equation is that teams don't punt to Hill anymore. they just kick it out of bounds.

It would be stupid not to.

But then again, teams still punt to Edelman, so I'm sure you'll come across a dumb team or three along the way.

They have something off on their stats. We're #1 in punt return yardage allowed at 1.7 yards.

We're #5 at kick return yardage allowed at 17.5

Haven't missed a FG or extra point.

Wait until Tom Brady and the offense gets the ball, then you will see the master at work, he'll make your defense look like a Pop Warner defense.

Heading down for this game. My first since the Oakland game a few years ago.

Didn't expect this one to be such a big deal when I decided to attend months ago. KC has given NE fits (regular season) recently and looks hot so logic says this will be a tough one.

I think this one is on Brady and McD to win. KC will score points and I'd love to see the D with a statement game by shutting down Mahomes, but that's pretty unlikely. Brady will need to control the ball and TOP plus score 7s most most drives. Should be a good one - stadium should be loud!
