If you compare Germany to Real Madrid, Germany has 3 goalkeepers that are better than Navas at Real Madrid. They can also play with four defenders from Bayern, who should be as good as those on Real Madrid. Their midfields are fairly equal on paper, but Real Madrid would have a huge advantage with a world class striker in Ronaldo, while Germany doesn't have a true world class goal scorer. The strenght of the squad would favour Germany, with star players as Leroy Sane in Machester City not even making the 23. He would be a hot candidate for Real Madrids 1st 11(to be fair im surprised he isn't in the German starting 11).
The quality of the players is less the issue than how much they practice together. I pick Madrid as an example, but you could also use Barca, PSG, Juve, City (as much as I hate to admit it) and so on. Those club players, as you know of course, know each others' games inside out.

Now, if you gave Brazil, Germany, France etc a year together, with a top club manager... well...

Belgium, on paper, have one of the strongest squads (as do France) out there, but they have had a distinct lack of results on the bigger stages. I wouldn't mind seeing either of them make a run for it, though.

On a separate note, my son and I are bonding like mad trying to get his world cup sticker album filled up. It's a money guzzler but worth it (I think I read that if you don't trade duplicates with other people, it'll cost on average around $1200 to fill it, which I'm not prepared to do!)
Yeah, there's quite a bit of online talk about how good England are. To be unfair about it, I think it's foreign fans buying into the Premier League hype. The reason I say that is that every England fan I know thinks they're good for the quarters at best.

I find there's a decent contingent of "1966" fans around, but most of my friends also don't rate England particularly.

Usually the English hype themselves, but they have failed so many times they are starting to realize where they are. The squad is decent tho, so they can make a good run. Their biggest issue is the lack of a solid goalkeeper.

Their biggest issue is that they have around eight starting players who are fairly average.

You can say that about a lot of teams. Portugal playing right now have 10 average players.

England can play like Liverpool, with 7 hard working players behind i.e. Sterling, Kane and Rashford. It wont win the world cup, but it can take them fairly far.

It stands to reason that wealthy franchises that aren't restricted by international borders will be able to put together better teams that those limited by hereditary. And don't get me wrong, league based futbol is fantastic. But to me, that is missing the point.

Even the Olympics can't capture the world's attention the way the World Cup tournament does. Entire countries shut down for their teams games. And what fan won't be tuning into the final come mid-July. This is still the preeminent tournament on the face of the earth.

Now that being said, opening the field to 48 teams is going too far. Part of what makes it special is how hard it is to qualify for the "show". Look at the teams on the outside looking in. The USA, Italy, The Netherlands. In 2026, there are going to be 16 groups of 3 teams each with 2 teams from each group advancing to the knockout phase. 16 teams will be "two and done". Expect to see some more Trinidad's and Tobagos sneaking in to the finals. To me, the tournament is fine as it is.

Obvious even to me. Changes are not made to better the sport. Changes are made to better the prophet.

Cheers

CR7 has entered LeBron territory. He's still a douche, but you have to respect his performance.

I used to hate Cristiano Ronaldo, but I think at this point you just gotta enjoy his performances while you can. The game against Spain will have to go down in history as one of the best individual performances in World Cup history.

Also Mexico beating Germany was a pleasant surprise. The World Cup so far has been great.
