Football doesn't have to be this.

If you watch early SB highlights they’re hitting and tackling in the manner I mention. They aren’t launching, going for the knockout.

They need to take a page out of college football - intentional helmet hit equals game ejection on the personal foul call. Set up a fine scale too. 1st offense. 2nd. 3rd. Escalating.

That would get it out of the game. If they were truly interested.

This is being proposed for 2018 to the Competition Committee.

That would certainly help.

I watched the Mitchell clip and he explained a hit on Tyler Eifert that, he claims, was due to a bad Dalton pass and that caused an unintentional H2H hit by him.

There should be somebody up in the league office smart enough to look at a case like that and if legit say 'OK, we see what he means-- rescind the fine --
Eifert dove at the last second' but have enough judgement to fine the shit out of serial offenders like Brandon Meriweather when he was still playing or Ryan Clark or Burfict-- those sorts of aholes. Any idiot could plainly see what they do.

It's not that hard, really, to figure out who the worst people are and fine the shit out of them until they stop it or kick them out of the league, but you are never going to be able to completely avoid H2H hits. It's going to be there for as long as the game exists. You just have to minimize the intentional stuff as much as possible and it seems eminently doable.

That's what I get out of the NFL right now -- really poor judgement more often than not even when they have a chance to sit back and see what happened.

If JuJu doesn't stand over "the body", he doesn't get the suspension. That taunting made the hit look like a premeditated intent to injure. That's why the ijjits who are outraged that Gronk's suspension isn't longer than his are flawed (Cowherd, Wilbon, etc). Gronk lost his shit in the heat of the moment. Considering the history of Cincy/Pitt and with Burfict, I seriously doubt this was a last second decision by JuJu

There's an inevitabilty I think that Football will eventually realign with rugby and just eliminate pads and helmets and no arm tackles etc. The CTE issue just gets worse the more it's examined and parents will simply not allow their kids to play the game. Something drastic will need to be done.

The irony of course is that pads and helmets etc were brought into the game because the sport was so Violent that President Theo Roosevelt threatened to ban the game after the 1905 college season where 19 players died on the field with scores crippled. This was mainly due to the flying wedge formation where both signs literally just ran straight into each other, trampling players and causing the horrific injuries. So protective gear was in and the forward pass brought in and formations like the flying wedge were banned.

Rugby has it's own issues as well. There's a concussion controversy there as well and the game has totally banned any tackles where the tackler does not use his arms to wrap around the ball carrier. Any player who does it is red carded (sent off the field with no replacements allowed) and can expect a bad. Any tackling or arms going above the neck area, is not allowed and is a penalty.

There can be no picking up players past the horizontal and driving them into the ground, aka the spear tackle like below. A player doing that could be banned a full year.

I must say the man makes some good points. He's likely to get fined but props for having the stones to speak his mind.
I have to wonder, how often are DBs in a defenseless position, compared to WRs? It's fine to get ready rid of safety concerns if you're delivering the hit, but if you're receiving the hits, I suspect the opinions could be different.

I do agree with him about QBs throwing "hospital balls", though.

Good point. Perhaps some players or former players should participate in the review process and could lend perspective like Mitchell notes. I doubt this is the case currently but perhaps someone knows more than I.. let me know. You won't ever get rid of hospital balls, especially with what passes for QB play on a lot of teams these days.

Some of this is true, but what else is true is that there are players out there that are in fact trying to lay a guy out, they are in fact trying to put them out. Defenders rarely play the ball, they play the man, nobody goes for the int, they go for the hit. The steelers are basically taught to lead with their heads and have done this forever, it cost one of their players maybe his career because of it. I am not saying every hit is dirty, but lets not act like players are not trying to in fact do what the NFL does not want them to do and that is to knock a guy out.

This was noted in an earlier post. The Burficts and the Suhs and the Ryan Clarks are well known. But an experienced eye who's 'been there" can distinquish between intentional harm and a guy trying to make a play.

Its just all about being "unnecessary" I look at the steelers players block and say, ok, could he have turned around put two hands up and kept him off the back zooming by, yes, or, light him up and stand over him while your team mate screams Karma is a bitch! Like I said, a lot of players just go for the light up. Again, this just seems like a steelers thing, a lot of their players are known for it. James Harrison was the king of it. I think its a lack of discipline really. Very rarely do we see a pats light up a guy play. I can think of a couple, the one from Browner, and then that block by Floyd on that block, but pats tend to be a bit safer so as to not draw a penalty. Steelers would rather light a guy up and then cry about it later.

You saw DeCastro try and stop him.... You also saw the dick try to twist his leg off. And then pretend he was hurt.

I love me some Ju Ju.
Sucks he got suspended for it.

not sure if you are serious but I am, bring back the Larry Czonka double bar face-mask with the horseshoe.

Injuries happened when you lay up, when you do not offset the impact.

If you want to lessen the impact, start with what I have suggested but really look at the supplements and testing for illegal substances making men bigger and faster than before. It makes sense that more injuries are happening more frequently, simply put Mass moving at a high rate of speed will cause more damage to both the target and itself. Hannah was 265 lbs, Gronk weighs more.

Adalius Thomas played safety in Baltimore at that weight.

Lagarette Blount is heavier than Hannah.

That is the issue that is working in conjunction with the helmet/face mask being used as a weapon.

Stop that and you minimize the head injuries.
