It was rare that everyone was together for meals. Between schedules and both parents working (out of necessity), we sometimes didn't see each other for days. My parents both worked their asses off to keep us grounded and on the straight path.

During those times, there were plenty of messed up people and families. We all knew who they were. And we typically knew why. One big difference is that neighbors watched out for other people's kids. People weren't afraid to step in and get involved.

I don't see anymore dysfunction today than i saw then. My wife and i always stressed the time together. But we brought up our kids in a time when schedules were more flexible and we only had two that were close in age. But no one watches out for others anymore for many reasons, liability being one. it's the "community" that is being lost.

What are the good traditions that you cite?

What are the bad traditions?
personally I spend almost every weekend from April to October with my kids camping. We fish, kayak, swim, shoot BB guns, play different games, walk in the woods, build stupid things like sailboats and rafts to see how much they carry, tell stories around a fire. as a single parent kid My uncle used to take us (his family, my family (mother, brother and I, and two other families with no father figure) camping for the month of July - I continued that tradition by taking kids camping with me for the past 20 plus years, my own kids from birth, my relatives from age 4 up.

I was that 25 year old in a trailer with 2-14 y.o., 2-7 y.o. and 3-4 y.o. kids by himself and not father to any. just uncle mikiemo or cousin mikiemo.

my kids, I teach them sports, I teach them family traditions for each holiday that I grew up with like Cracking eggs or the family stuffing recipe. I bring simplicity back into their life as much as I can but I also sit with them while they use the computer, watch TV do homework.

as for bad traditions, I am a single Dad who I took my kids away from the possibility that bad traditions, that haunt certain families, could get them. I try protect them from a history repeating itself.

I am flawed, I screw up but I try.

Thanks, Mikie. Good examples.

And I wouldn't say you're flawed. You're human, just like the rest of us.
