I despise condo associations and HOA and wouldn't be caught dead living in a place where they have control.

When the wife and I were looking for a house back in 04, there was 1 house that we were seriously interested in seeing. We got the grand tour of the place and it was a very nice home but then I got to talking to the owner about the HOA.

They told me you weren't allowed to have more than 2 cars and no trailers or any kind of toy stored outside. That was a deal breaker for us and we never even made them an offer. I can't imagine owning a home and having someone else tell me what I can and can't store outside of it.

On the other hand, before we got married my wife was renting a house. Nice ranch with a large backyard that was bordered by a hill full of pines that led to a lake. It came up for a sale and I wanted to buy it. The reason I didn't? The guy next door had a backyard full of junks.

Hey that's fine if you don't mind being told what you can and can't have in and around your own house but I have a problem with it. Freedom of choice is a great thing.

I was just giving the other side of the argument. A tricycle in the driveway is one thing. A backyard full of rusted out junks is another. Not only is it unsightly, it hurts the value of your house. So in a way they were impacting my freedom of choice.

There's a difference between junk and storing a trailer with sleds on it, or a boat or wheelers or a camper, that is what this HOA was restricting and those items are very, very popular up here. I wouldn't live in a trashy neighborhood either, luckily most of these junkyards are outside of the muni.

In my neighborhood, I only know if a couple of houses that don't have any kind of toy stored outside and this is a very nice and well respected neighborhood.

HOA living isn't for everyone, how about we leave it at that?
