RIP Andy Johnson

We called him "Apple Juice". He and Sam Bam made a great backfield for that '76 team.

Quote:

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Andy Johnson, who starred as Georgia’s quarterback before going on to play running back with the New England Patriots for nine seasons, has died after a long illness. He was 65.

Georgia issued a statement saying Johnson died early Wednesday in Athens.

Johnson took over as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback in 1971 and led the team to an 11-1 record that included a Gator Bowl victory. He set a Southeastern Conference sophomore rushing record and finished second in the league with 870 yards on the ground, along with 13 touchdowns.

Johnson started two more seasons for the Bulldogs and finished his career with 1,799 rushing yards, the most by a quarterback at that time.

A fifth-round pick by New England, Johnson played 94 games — including 43 starts — before finishing his career with the USFL’s Boston Breakers. He rushed for a career high 699 yards with six touchdowns for the Patriots in 1976.

Johnson is survived by his wife Charlotte and three children: Kristy, Brent and Brooke.

Wonderful FB player, loved watching him in the 70's with Francis, Grogan, Sam Bam, Stingley, Hannah, Don Calhoun etc. He was Julian Edelman before JE, as he played QB at Georgia. RIP Andy Johnson.

It was good, and we were so young it was 20 kids taking the train, drinking beers and having a blast.

I crashed the field after the Breakers scored and Johnny Walton had to come out for the extra point against the Philadelphia Stars.

so much fun.

Steve1 has disabled reputation
I was really sad when I heard he passed. It seems the Patriots used him correctly back in the day. Not too much, not too little. Kind of like a Kevin Faulk. He could run well, but was also a good receiver. Like James White. But the Pats were stacked on offense on most of those Andy Johnson-Steve Grogan years.

Andy Johnson...8 yards here, 8 yards there....and then it was on to Sam Bam, All-World Francis, Grogan with a keeper, maybe a pass to Stingley or Morgan....and watch out for that Freight Train John Hannah!

Andy Johnson, a star in Georgia, and one of the real good ones on the 70's Patriots
