This is the simple story of a young man who panicked and copped out (he'll certainly hear it at the gym, can you imagine him saying "she ordered too much"?).
He also seemingly dissapeared after seeing reactions here. He'll learn from this.

Anyways, WHERE THE HECK IS THE POLL HERE ??

Nah, I never get offended much by anything anyone posts on a message board. I guess that is part of my problem with some people's reactions in this thread.

Thanks for the kind words.

THEY aren't YOU, man!...
You're right Peg. In my posts, we (the 'Planet) are the jury. Just like a jury never truly knows "what happened on the night in question," we here are involved in the excercise of figuring out who was right/wrong based only on the facts we've been given. The information is scant, so we fill in the blanks with our own worldly knowledge.

I'll admit, I like most of us, resort to stereotypes. It's easier that way. My stereotype of Fusion is he's a horny guy. Of her, she's a user. I can relate to horny guys, having...um...heard about them.

As for users, the women I know best, my mother, my sister, my wife, by sisters-in-law, would never, ever, take advantage of someone as this girl was. Therefore, I'm not being kind to her.

Plus, can we all agree that the "doggie bag" was for her boyfriend?

*Sigh*

I really, really, really had hoped that I'd said goodbye forever to this thread.

In fact, I bit my tongue, wanting to reply to JoePhoto's post about his realization that Fusion had described himself and his date as a gentleman and lady.

"Oh, the irony," I thought. I was going to offer Joe a bravo for his find, but I felt I'd promised that I'd said my last and I was going to stick to it.

But that was just too freaking funny. I just can't leave it alone.

I think we should have some kind of follow-up poll. Something to the effect of....

Was the doggie bag for her boyfriend?

Was the boyfriend a work of fiction designed to put Fusion off?

Neither of the above?

All of the above?

For my part, I still think he was a work of fiction and that she's an athletic girl with a strong appetite. In fact, it had occurred to me earlier (based on a somewhat similiar experience of a friend of mine who once offered to take someone out as a "thank you" gift) that there is some practical advice to be had here:

1. The person doing the taking out should always select the restaurant.

2. If you take someone out to their favorite restaurant, don't be surprised if they lose all sense of propriety and eat and drink themselves into a coma.

Beauty, eh?

You know what else is brilliant? That our protagonist, our brilliant and noble squire from the court of Urbino who deigned to treat such a common, insipid and lowly woman to lunch, misspelled "reneged" when he started the thread.

My vote would also be for the boyfriend being fictional.

Another idea for a poll could be, "What would you do if you were in the same situation?" If it were me, once she mentioned the ex-boyfriend, I would have told her off big time, but I would have paid the bill.

BTW, fusion's post was so interesting that I had my wife take a look at it. I was actually flabergasted by what she said. She said the girl was rude, and she also said since the guy did leave $15.00 for his portion of the bill, he did the right thing. I think I married the right person (maybe it's time bring up the subject of strip clubs with her).

Women are so much more difficult to explain. Who knows what the hell they are thinking???

Most men are so much easier to figure out. TV, sports, sex, food, alcohol. Sure there's more, but those are the 5 major things that if a man has, he's happy.

Most women... Sorry, can't help you out. But if I ever figure out the mystery of the woman's brain I'll make a killing writing a book about it. :p

Interesting premise, Dave--to ask how others would handle the same situation...
Frankly, I can't picture myself even getting into a situation, quite like this. For one thing, I seldom accept an invitation (especially when I hardly know someone), whereas the other party is "treating"... Fraught with too many "unknowns" and I don't want to feel beholden to another, unless I choose to do so... Therefore, I assume that we are going "dutch", unless I decide to pick up that tab. NOTE: even when I set out with the intention of picking up the tab, I make a point of waiting until the other person has ordered. That way, they order what they REALLY want. If you aren't SURE that you want to pick up the tab, then wait and see how the situation unfolds, BEFORE offering to do so and then make your decision about that, at the end of the meal.
But, if you DO offer to pick up the tab--regardless of what juncture that you made this offer--then you need to stick by your word and do so... (And this goes, regardless of if it is a man or a woman, making this offer.)
Again, there's no need to make this offer, if you aren't sure about it. Modern dating practices certainly don't require that the guy must pay the bill--even if the suggestion of meeting out for the meal, was his idea... Trust me guys--I'm back out there in the dating trenches and it is my experience that most guys are happy to either split the tab or even let me pay the whole thing... But, then perhaps I am "fishing off a different pier", as it were. ;)
But, I digress...
If it weren't for the fact that Fusion made the offer of treating her to lunch, then I would be supporting his decision to simply cover his own portion of the bill. But, because of this offer, I think that the other details of each person's behavior is irrelevent. (That is to say, that I am NOT defending how this young woman handled the situation.) Alas, most of us here are not twenty-somethings and the lack of maturity is probably at the crux of this whole sordid affair...

Women sure can be complicated beasts, IMO... That's why I prefer hanging out with guys--pretty much, what ya see, is what ya get!
Reminds me of something that someone emailed to me, awhile ago:
HOW TO IMPRESS A WOMAN vs. HOW TO IMPRESS A MAN:
~Wine her, ~Show up naked,
~Dine her, ~Bring chicken wings & beer,
~Call her, ~Don't block the TV.
~Hug her,
~Support her,
~Hold her,
~Surprise her,
~Compliment her,
~Smile at her,
~Listen to her,
~Laugh with her,
~Cry with her,
~Romance her,
~Encourage her,
~Believe in her,
~Pray with her,
~Cuddle with her,
~Shop for her,
~Give her jewelry,
~Buy her flowers,
~Hold her hand,
~Write love letters to her,
~Go to the end of the Earth and back again for her.*
*Note: the definition of this is different for every woman...

Well, we all have our standards. I'm not sure slinking out on a promise is a very high one. But I also know that women are pretty much conditioned to believe that other women deserve the treatment they get. It's a kind of internalized misogyny.

I would have had great respect and empathy for him had he, during lunch...

1. Said, gee...I'm kind of on a budget. I'm sorry, I can't afford a lot... or could we split this?

2. Told her directly how he felt. Put his portion of the check down, etc.

He didn't do these things because wanted to impress her. And he wanted to get laid. And when he came up empty handed he no longer had a vested interest in the image he was trying to craft.

He's not being real or practical about himself or his resources. he presents a false persona. This is typical behavior of a person with very little character.

I want to focus your attention on something here that hasn't really been talked about and that maybe your wife might want to consider and that might give many on this board a greater sense of empathy for this young woman (as stupid as she is). This "something" is the reason why I believe she made the story about her "ex" up.

Let's take a look at the "climax" (sorry for the pun) of the story, because it's very telling.

Written by Fusion99
Quote:
To say that I felt taken advantage of would be an understatement. Call me overly polite, but when someone offers to take me out to lunch, I try to keep the costs minimal - a simple drink, meal sized appropriate for the time of day and, maybe, a split appetizer.

I have one last shot at making this worthwhile.

"I've had a great time with you. Perhaps you'd like to go to your place and spend some more time together, talking and getting to know each other," I say with the sincerest expression of interest and kindness that I can muster.

She replies, "I have to pick up my ex-boyfriend from the court house in an hour. His mother dropped him off, but I'm his only ride back."

Game over.
A few observations:

I've had a great a time with you..

* He didn't have a great time with her. He is lying. If he imagines that his attitude about her stupidity didn't play out, I'd suggest he think again. Most of us know when we are being condescended to.

I say with the sincerest expression of interest and kindness that I can muster.

Uh-huh. Exactly. Most people can see through these things. He is a false person who is looking to take advantage of her sexually. In other words, he is a creep. If this young woman is as attractive as he suggests, then she has had no small amount of experience with this kind of man.

Perhaps you'd like to go to your place and spend some more time together, talking and getting to know each other...

* Again, he is lying. He has admitted to us that he is lying. Does he really think that she doesn't know he is lying?

*This is an extremely aggressive come-on. Extremely. He is not only sexually predatory, but he imagines this woman is stupid. And maybe she is. Certainly she is unsophisticated. But if any man on this board thinks that she doesn't know what he means by this... wake up. And, as has been suggested by other posters, never, ever use this line. It's as transparent as glass.

*Furthermore, he is her ride. She has to get into a car with him. He has a great deal of control over her safety. And she knows it.

* If I were in this young woman's shoes, I would be very concerned right now. I would be worried as hell about getting in a car with this guy. And I would be kicking myself that I had taken a ride from him and not met him at the restaurant.

I would be looking for any and all possible reasons to end this date as soon as possible. And if I'm not near public transportation and have to depend on this guy for transportation, then I'm really up a creek.

*In this situation it wouldn't surprise me at all if she decided to come up with some fictional reason why he can't come up. And the more potentially menacing this reason is, the better. Especially if she's scared.

*He showed what kind of person he is by "slinking" out.

*She, in the end, was maybe relieved as hell that she didn't have to get into a car with him.

So, when I read this, I don't see a normal male. There's nothing wrong with a normal male who wants to get laid. I see the following:

*A pathological liar who tries to present a false persona in order to get what he wants.

*Someone who lacks empathy and basic respect for other people -- at least this woman -- a woman he saw as desirable enough to bed.

*Someone who is extremely aggressive and sexually predatory.

*Someone who, when he does not get what he wants, acts impulsively, criminally, and without regard for the safety of others.

*This post, along with Fusion's earlier posts about his ex-girlfriend suggest to me a man who may have a very hard time "reality" testing, as well as a man that has a very difficult time with women. Did he really dump his ex-girlfriend? In my mind, "Not bloody likely," since we're giving ourselves the freedom to speculate on these "characters."

In short, what you all read as a funny little story, suggests to me a man with sociopathic tendencies.

If that's what being a "normal" male is, then I would not want anything to do with men. Fortunately, I know too many men to believe that this fits the description of a normal, healthy, horny male.

If Fusion is lucky, he has avoided being beaten to death by any male who knows and cares about this young woman.

If Fusion is smart, he'll get himself into therapy right quick.
